History

edit

Construction and revenue service

edit

The locomotive was constructed by H. K. Porter of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1930.[3] It was first used by the Arundel Engineering Co.[4] for the construction of the Safe Harbor Dam along the Susquehanna River at Columbia, Pennsylvania in 1930 and 1931.[5] In 1941, the locomotive was reconditioned by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR). Then for a period during World War II, No. 65 was used as a stationary boiler to provide steam to the Safe Harbor powerhouse.[6]

Excursion service

edit

In 1970, the near-bankrupt Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern tourist railroad was reconstituted as a volunteer-run operation and began to make a profit[7] Two years later in 1972, No. 65 was acquired from the Safe Harbor Water and Power Company.[6][8]

For nearly forty years, No. 65 was the mainstay of steam-hauled tourist services on the WK&S. It ran until 2010, but is now stored, out of service.[6]

BEDT No. 15 disguise

edit

In 2004, the very similar Porter saddle tank Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal No. 15 on the Strasburg Rail Road was modified into a working Thomas the Tank Engine replica.[9][10]

At the same time, No. 65 was briefly repainted as No. 15, with B.E.D.T. lettering on the tank.[6]
