Discussion
editSince the bot will only be editing talk pages, you shouldn't do "AWB general cleanup". Also, some listed participants for these projects are blocked, for example, Mpvide65 and L-Tyrosine at Wikipedia:UKRD. These shouldn't be messaged by the bot, and could probably be removed from the lists altogether..? When you say this is manually assisted, do you mean you'll just be using AWB normally (e.g. pressing "Save" for every edit)? Lastly, how would you get a list of pages to tag for a wikiproject? Presumably using categories? If so you should be aware of the problems when using categories recursively (see the last paragraph of the intro to Wikipedia:Bot requests, although of course you are free to not fill recursively, and just use the top category). - AWB doesn't do much as far as general cleanup in talk pages. All it does is edits related to talk pages and talk page banners. Here is what it does:
- Adds Wikiprojectbanners shell if there are 4 or more wikiprojects
- Moves some templates like Talk header and Skip to talk above Wikiprojects
- Adds 1= to wikiprojectbannershell if missing
- Adds Untitled as a section header if the first section doesn't have a header.
- Thats about it so there is no reason not to allow it to run. I also wanted to add that there are several really good bots that already do message and newsletter delivery so that piece of the functionality may not be needed. I support the rest though. --Kumioko (talk) 14:23, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Thank you Kumioko for your replies. Kingpin, yes, I am aware that talk pages do not include AWB general cleanup. And soon, I was planning on doing a member check on all members listed on the four associated projects to check for people such as the ones you have listed. And yes, I will be using the save feature every time, as while I am confident in the edits, I want to make sure that I am tagging the correct pages every time. And yes, I will be using categories, and I am aware of the issues with recursiveness, and do not plan to use recursive tagging. --Admrboltz (talk) 16:32, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Approved. All sounds good. Since you're using AWB in a non-bot mode and a tried and tested method of editing (Kingbotk), there's hardly a reason for approval, apart from that I expect you plan to edit fairly fast. So I will request a bot flag, but it will not be flagged as a bot on the AWB checkpage page. Should you want to use the bot mode at a later date file another request then. Use the cleanup settings or not, as you wish, doesn't really matter if it's only semi-automated (you may only use the cleanup settings when performing one of the other two tasks). Only run the messaging bot after sorting out the member lists. - Kingpin13 (talk) 14:02, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
