Operator: Thehelpfulone
Automatic or Manually Assisted: Automatic
Programming Language(s): Python Pywikipedia or AWB
Function Overview: Will be used to move categories on pages (i.e. Rename the category on every page).
Edit period(s): Whenever required.
Already has a bot flag (Y/N): Yes
Function Details: Using pywikipedia's category.py, I will use the "move" function to run tasks that will allow me to easily move categories and/or subcategories to the new names when asked to for any categories. I can also use AWB to complete this task, so I will use one or the other, they will both be able to complete the task, but I will be able to stop the renaming if something goes wrong and re-start in AWB more easily.
Discussion
editCurrently I plan to use this for this task, but will use it for other tasks if required. The Helpful One 20:31, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Seems pretty uncontroversial and straightforward to me. Suggest speedy approval. --MZMcBride (talk) 20:47, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Remember that adding or removing categories from people, especially living people, can potentially be very controversial. Can you give assurances that large-scale category changes will (A) be clearly non-controversial, or (B) be backed by clear consensus somewhere? – Quadell (talk) 22:04, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Indeed I can, I currently only plan to use the bot for a particular Outlines WikiProject, which shouldn't be controversial at all. For anything that is controversial, I plan to have consensus - don't want to get lots of angry talk page messages! :) The Helpful One 22:06, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I believe User:Cyde runs a category renaming/deleting bot. Will this duplicate his work? He has been running it for several years and has a very stable code platform, will this reuse his platform? MBisanz talk 02:31, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- It doesn't look to me like it would duplicate work, because Cyde and THO will have different lists of cats to rename. I'm sure it'd be easier for THO to run it himself than to have to ask Cyde each time. Also, Cyde's bot is certainly very stable, but it's not as if changing categories is a technically difficult thing to do, so I don't see too many ways a recoded implementation could screw it up. – Quadell (talk) 14:39, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Ah, it seems that the task that required a category rename was fixed with a simple template change. I was wondering if I could request my bot to also be able to add Categories to pages, the task is detailed on my user talk page, User_talk:Thehelpfulone#AWB_Task_-_Category_adding_task. Thanks, The Helpful One 16:41, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes, that's fine. – Quadell (talk) 00:54, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How's it going? – Quadell (talk) 13:50, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Hi there, I've been very busy in the past few weeks, and I am going on a wikibreak in a few weeks too - could you put this BRFA on hold until I come back? Thanks, The Helpful One 21:57, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Withdrawn by operator. Sure. Feel free to reopen this whenever you're ready. – Quadell (talk) 22:37, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
