Wikipedia:CARL Medical Editing Initiative/Fall 2021/Course Overview/Assignment 2

Goal: Each student in the group will perform a literature search for information regarding the group’s Wikipedia article. Identify one citation from the literature search from which information can be retrieved to improve the group’s assigned Wikipedia article. Use the project resources page for guidance.

Submission: Each group will upload a single assignment to gradebook that includes a page completed by each student in the group. Thus, a group with 7 students will have 7 pages, each page having the student’s name at the top. The document should be titled with the name of your group using the following format: Group XX_Wikiassignment2. This assignment is being marked by the librarians.

Task for Submission: Each student page should explain:

1) How you searched for a source (search strategy – where you went to find it).

2) What potential sources were identified and considered (give examples of 1 or 2). Provide the complete citation for the selected resource(s) and use any citation style (e.g. APA 7, Vancouver Style etc.).

3) Why the source was chosen (what made it better than other choices). Each student in the group will submit a different resource. Provide the complete citation for the selected resource and use any citation style (e.g. APA 7, Vancouver Style etc.).

4) List at least three reasons why the source that was selected meets Wikipedia’s reliable medical sources (MEDRS) criteria.

5) How do you plan to use the source for improving the article?

Grading: Each citation (one per person) will be marked using the below rubric:

1)     1 mark for appropriateness of search strategy

2)     2 marks for citations identified / considered (provide the complete citation – e.g. APA 7, Vancouver Style)

3)     2 marks for a clear rationale for why this resource was the best choice

4)     3 marks for 3 reasons that this meets the criteria set by Wikipedia

5)     2 marks for what you plan to do with this source

Total = 10 marks
