Does a wiki on a country's scuba dive sites meet Wikipedia guidleines?

edit

Hi, I am new to this and am attempting to describe all the scuba diving sites in Timor-Leste. My aims are to educate and inform, leading to safer and more rewarding diving; global reach that benefits this developing country through tourism; and collaboration - a place where any diver can improve the information. Unfortunately, most dive blogs and webs are closed or barely open to collaboration. Note that this is NOT a commercial plug for anyone; it is just information about the dive sites.

I know my wiki is not sourced from "authoritative" sources, other than the fact I am a PADI Dive Master who has done about 200 dives in Timor-Leste over six years, with a wide group of other divers.

What you write could be original research. So see if you can come up with publications that have something on this topic. It sounds to me to be a valid topic for Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not the same thing as a blog, or a place where any diver can add stories. But it is supposed to be an encyclopedia. Diving sites of Guam is an example of a similar article, but not a good example due to no references! Graeme Bartlett (talk) 02:13, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Are there good independent sources which cover diving in Timor-Leste generally? Presumably there will be some commercial sites which partly/mostly promote their own business; perhaps there will be some sites with tourist tales, or forums, &c - but is there anything which is more general and which is independent? Obviously the world is full of economic activity so the encyclopædia can hardly avoid mentioning it at all, but it's difficult to write a non-spammy article if the only sources are promotional. bobrayner (talk) 11:22, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As an aside, if you find that one particular dive site has much better sources than others, it might be a good idea to write an article about that site; writing a new article nowadays has a fairly steep learning-curve for first-timers, so choosing something with a narrower scope might give you an easier start. bobrayner (talk) 11:24, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

August Darnell

edit

I'd really like to separate the musician August Darnell/Tommy Browder (aka Kid Creole) from the 1980s-present musical group Kid Creole and the Coconuts. Having the two combined seems to reduce Darnell to that of a bandleader while playing down the contributions of the band members. Darnell was also a member of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and a prolific producer and writer for other groups. I think these examples alone should be justification enough for him to have his own page.

Darnell (real name: Thomas August Darnell Browder) uses a lot of stage-names, most obviously Kid Creole and many of these currently redirect to Kid Creole and the Coconuts. I would like to begin a new separate page and don't know if I can or how to go about it without discussion. Chadwholovedme (talk) 01:16, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds fair enough to me. The guideline on this is WP:BRD which says be bold and do it. If someone disagrees they undo what you did, then you discuss it. If you can find at least two indepedent references on Tommy Browder or his aliases then you can get this article started. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 12:06, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
