Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/RedFlag
This picture of a Red Army soldier flying this flag is very symbolic about the fall of Nazi Germany. It also seems like it is foreshadowing what would happen over the next 50 years. It was uploaded by User:AndyL and is in the public domain.

- It is a very famous photograph, but this is a very unfortunate crop of Yevgeny Khaldei's image. See e.g. [1]. Interesting: there's a similar (but not identical!) photograph, and also note these comments! There seem to exist various retouched versions of this image, see e.g. "missing officer in bottom right corner", or "with smoke, two watches clearly visible" (also here). As to its copyright status: I guess this should be {{PD-USSR}}? And I take it that this is the source of the version uploaded to Wikipedia? Also note: we also have Image:YEVGENY KHALDEI - RAISING THE SOVIET FLAG OVER THE REICHSTAG.jpg. Lupo 11:46, August 30, 2005 (UTC)
- Very intersting to read is also this German page (with larger copies of all these versions), which has been published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ([2]). Lupo 11:58, August 30, 2005 (UTC)
- Somebody has now re-uploaded Image:YEVGENY KHALDEI - RAISING THE SOVIET FLAG OVER THE REICHSTAG.jpg over the originally nominated Image: Reichstag tn.jpg. Unfortunately, that one is a poor reproduction. Lupo 13:42, August 30, 2005 (UTC)

- Is there a larger version of this? --Lord Voldemort (Dark Mark) 20:28, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yes. See this German page (with larger copies of all these versions), which I had mentioned already above. It has 567×414px reproductions. The largest ones I've found are 800×589px, officer removed completely, 800×577px, with officer, two watches, and smoke, and 866×607px, one watch removed, with smoke. I have not found any larger reproduction, but versions of the image have been reproduced in countless print publications. If someone could scan it in (maybe even different versions?), we could produce larger reproductions ourselves. Lupo 06:46, August 31, 2005 (UTC)
Oppose the currently displayed version (Image:YEVGENY KHALDEI - RAISING THE SOVIET FLAG OVER THE REICHSTAG.jpg). Poor reproduction, funny white streak.Let's figure out first which version we want to use. Personally, I'd prefer the original, unaltered photograph, i.e. "no smoke, with officer with two watches". Voting on this image to become "featured" is premature. BTW, I think we should have an article about this famous photograph, its history, and the various alterations it has been subjected to. - Support the original, unaltered version. It just looks better. TomStar81 01:47, 2 September 2005 (UTC)

- Support. IMHonestOpinion ALL versions should be preserved, and "featured picture" for this picture should include the "original" and the doctored version. Doctored versions are good material to a future article about doctored pictures, I made a comparation of both versions and identified the tank at the bottom left at [3] Randroide 12:04, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Randroide
