Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Storks samarkand
I discovered this picture while writing Liberty ship articles. When I saw it, I was shocked to see how vibrant and beautiful it was. It was taken around 1912 by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii, a man who dedicated his life to the advancement of photography. It appears in the Samarkand article as the first picture. I believe that it is featured material.

- Oppose Bottom looks a little dodgy (due to age?), bit on the low side of resolution, seems to be suffering from over sharpening. --Fir0002 12:25, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- The funky colors near the bottom are a byproduct of the technique Prokudin-Gorskii used. howcheng {chat} 21:58, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose. We've seen better (larger) color shots from this photographer before, I see no reason to accept such a small image this time. On a side note, I'd love to see a great frontal shot of this Ulugh Beg Madrasa place... looks lovely. --Dante Alighieri | Talk 02:09, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose. Too small, for one thing. howcheng {chat} 21:58, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

- Comment Here's the original. This version has obviously been heavily processed, though, and my editing skills (and monitor) aren't good enough to get a high-res version up to the general quality of this one; someone else may like to have a go. Looking at the original also introduces a new problem: it isn't identified as "Stork nests on the Ulugh Beg Madrasa", merely as "Arched entranceway to a mosque with minaret"; so we may not even know what it's a picture of.
