- Proposed caption
- A tugboat, or tug, is a boat used to maneuver large ships in harbours, over the open sea, or through rivers and canals. They also tow barges, disabled ships, and oil rigs. Equipped with powerful engines producing thousands of horsepower, extensive rigging equipment, and a fender of tires for protection, tugboats can push or tow large vessels with high precision and speed.

- Oppose another nice diagram that doesn't render right at full rez. Many of the words are cut off when viewed in firefox... How long until SVG is deprecated? de Bivort 20:59, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment, i can't see the cut-offs you're talking about - maybe you just need to upgrade your browser?--Aqwis 21:58, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- doubt it. It auto-updates. The words cut off are "fender" and "bridge". de Bivort 22:15, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- Odd, those two words appear correctly here. Must be something else than the browser causing it then, maybe your screen resolution? --Aqwis 22:24, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- Also looks fine to me in Firefox 2.0.0.9. Neither word is cut off. --MichaelMaggs 22:26, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

- Doesn't work for me. "Fender" and "bridge" are cut off. Using Firefox 2.0.0.9 on MacOS 10.4.10. Kaldari 19:53, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

- Support Edit 2. Works perfectly in Konqueror/KSVG. Nice clean enc illustration. A bit childrens-bookish, but not in a bad way. WP could use more of this kind. --Dschwen 01:27, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- Support Very good diagram, reminds me of The Way Things Work book. Cat-five - talk 07:37, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- Weak oppose. I'd prefer a picture of a real tugboat labelled up, rather than an animated one. The text also renders poorly when you zoom in. Pstuart84 Talk 11:48, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- Support though 'signal lamp' or 'Aldis lamp' seem to be more common than 'Morse lamp'. Matt Deres 16:01, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps it's more common in British English. (Notice the spelling of "tyre").--HereToHelp 02:37, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- Support Very informative and encyclopedic. H92110 18:11, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Oppose. There is a problem with the font used in this SVG. I'm assuming it's just a font that isn't on my Mac. The reason the labels are cut off for some users (myself included) is that the labels are rendering in a large typewriter font at full resolution, while the generated thumbnail seems to have them in something similar to Trubuchet. We desperately need some kind of guideline for what fonts to use when labeling diagrams in Wikipedia.Support Edit 1 or 2 - Looks great now! Kaldari 20:07, 12 November 2007 (UTC)- If I pull it up in Firefox on my PC, it looks fine, so I assume it must be using a PC-only font. Kaldari 20:23, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose What bothers me the most about this image is the red dots at the end of each rule leading from the labels. Those rules also seem a bit heavy (I guess they are the same weight as the lines defining the edge details of the illustration, thus where they overlap creates a hierarchy issue). I'm also bothered a bit about the placement of the labels. Two sets of columns are flush right while the rest are flush left. Then there is the one label floating in space for the hull. Placing the labels along a proportional grid would help structure the illustration better than the arbitrary, but not random placement of the labels now. I also don't like the placement of "Tugboat". Perhaps a strong title label in a corner could help. By itself, it is a decent illustration (the colors help contribute to making it seem "cartoony" in addition to the style). Perhaps I'll give it a shot of revising the image (but no promises).-Andrew c [talk] 22:53, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- Support edit 1 I chose a more modest color scheme, reduced pointer line thickness, removed dots, arial font. I'm willing to do other edits and change the color scheme. Do the captions render correctly now? Jeff Dahl (Talk • contribs) 22:00, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Support edit 1, to be honest i like the original better, but we can't feature it if it doesn't render correctly in everyone's browser, of course. --Aqwis 22:33, 13 November 2007 (UTC)- Support edit 2, --Aqwis 22:33, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Support edit 1 Agree with Aqwis; I actually prefer the original, but if it's rendering incorrectly the edit works for me too. CillaИ ♦ XC 15:18, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

- Comment, I strongly prefer the original. There is nothing wrong with an up-beat color scheme and I found the red dots very useful. The new color scheme with the dark shades makes it hard to see where the pointer lines end. The only positive change in the edit I can see is the new font, if it really improves cross platform rendering. --Dschwen 19:54, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment OK, I'll re-do the diagram with the original formatting but with arial font. Jeff Dahl (Talk • contribs) 21:32, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment Here is another version with the original color scheme and pointer dots, but the font is arial so it will render correctly and reduced pointer line thickness. I still prefer edit 1, though. Jeff Dahl (Talk • contribs) 22:20, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the new edit! --Dschwen 01:11, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
- Support Good, clear illustration. I'll leave it to others to decide which version. —Pengo 06:26, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
