OriginalWilliam Harvey Carney, who escaped slavery, joined the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, and, for his actions with recovering the American flag during the Second Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863, was (37 years later) awarded the first Medal of Honor ever awarded to an African-American.
Reason
