Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Portal:China/archive1

Re-submitted. I feel that most of the previous comments were addressed. However, there were no final voting issued as the page received few attention. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 18:44, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From the criteria,

1. Through the help of participants in WikiProject China, the Portal:China contains all kinds of information about China.

2. This portal showcases the very best work of Wikipedia related to China consistently, rotating Selected Article and Selected Picture once a month for half a year. The contents are selected from the Portal:China/Selected article and pictures.

3. Userful: This portal covers people, history, culture, and geography fields that's related to China. It showcases one of the 20+ featured articles that's related to China each month.

Attractive: This portal uses a skeleton that combines the design of the Main Page and the Portal box. There are no red links, besides a couple links in the "Tasks you can do", under "Requested articles".

Ergonomic: This portal is very automated. The nomination page for Selected Article and Selected Picture follows the layout of Wikipedia standard, which is easy to use. It automatically detects the vote page for the next two months.

Well-maintained: This portal is very actively maintained. It does not require much work, as it uses many automated features (extensive use of Magic Words).

4. This portal follows the guidelines as outlined in Wikipedia:Portal/Guidelines.

5. This portal uses reasonable amount of images, all of them under appropriate copyright status. All of them have captions also. The Selected Picture is correctly credited to the author.

6. Besides the notice on the coverage of this portal, Portal:China does not contain any self-referential context.

First time nominating, cheers. Thank you for the support! AQu01rius (User • Talk) 01:20, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • The beginning disambig for the other China portals could be shorter(a simple "see also"), if it even needs to be there at all.
  • Column widths seem lopsided.
  • Associated wikimedia and Chinese wikipedias should be in same boxes as the rest of the portal.
  • No lists, under either categories or topics.
  • Categories section is not very comprehensive.

Just two small things

  • I have adjusted the issues according to the comments; I shortened the disambig (The China portal is not a national portal, which must be clarified, so it can't really be just "See also", nor removed).
  • The portal does seem a little lopsided in 800x600 resolutions, but isn't it kind of similar for other portals? I will try to solve it.
  • I have added the China-related lists under "Categories" section, which should also make the section a bit more comprehensive.

Thanks for the comments! AQu01rius (User • Talk) 02:26, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done.
No. If we take off the disamb text, people will not realize that this is not a national portal until they see "related portals". Even if they see "related portals", they mostly likely would still not realize so, as you don't seem quite realize it either? I've shorten the length even more now, but I don't think we can take it off.
  • Use something more relevant images in the introduction section. It is the country's portal. Use country flag/emblem/map image. If other images are not available, then please use the image available on right with a slightly bigger size. Summarize the introduction section as well. Mentioning shortcut could be appericiated.
Portal:China is not a national portal as mentioned, and we cannot use country flag nor emblem. I've enlarged the image on the right.
Consider shortening the intro section as well. The image at left is really worthful?
Done.
  • Need an extensive work on Anniversaries section.
The anniversaries will always remain pre-done for the next 30 days. The rest of it should be acceptable as it encourages participation.
  • I suppose there is no requirement of redundant link for editing Tasks you can do.
Yeah, but the task list is transcluded in other pages where there's no button for edit section. Also, I think the inclusion of the redudant edit link would encourage participation. What do you think? Anyways, I removed it.
Please update the list. Those articles have been created, remove them from the requests and consider maintaining it regularly.
Done.
  • You may use Related portals section below China Topics as centered.
To balance the tables, yes, I was going to do that. But if I do so, the section would look very empty unless if I include clickable images, which some people opposes. What do you think?
Not a big deal.
  • Addition of News section would be very appericiable, if it is possible to create and maintain.
This has been discussed in Portal:China, and there's consensus on that the inclusion of a news section would violate the non-political nature of Portal:China. I've added it back again though, but modified it so it only links to the Current Events page of both Republic of China and People's Republic of China. What do you think?
This would solve the purpose. But I suppose you can modify it little bit. Do not use archive link for Taiwan current news. You can use common heading for both and link them properly.

Thanks for your comments. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 18:29, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A very good response to most of the comments, need very little work to make it a featured portal. Shyam (T/C) 04:29, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comments again. I've went over the to do list again and cleaned it up. The intro section was not written by me, and I will try to shorten the summary and add meaningful images. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 05:11, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of work has been put into this, but you should compare it to our featured portals for styling.

Thanks for the remainder. I do take reference of the styling of geographic featured portals. I have a tendency to blend them in, so my styling may appear mixed.
  • "Anniversaries for January 17" > "On this day...". Put the day in bold at the beginning of the section instead. See the main page for example. Also bold the link to the subject of the entries. Sentences lack periods. "(This event is known as 皖南事变)." - Add a translation of it in brackets and add "in the Chinese language".
I copied it directly off that year page, and didn't re-style it. It's done now (and will do in the future using the {{zh-tsp}} template shall similar situation appear again).
Issues still exist, also remove all the "for January" from the titles. Michaelas10 (Talk) 10:41, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Tasks you can do!" > "Things you can do". Not necessarily, but by standards.
In my opinion, I think "tasks" is more literary, also per {{tasks}}. But it's minor issue, and is easily subject to change.
  • Centralize the headers and reduce their size a bit. Avoid repetition of the portal's name in the headers (e.g. "China Topics" > "Topic"). Only the first word of the header should be capitalized per WP:MSH.
Done.
The headers still look huge through Internet Explorer and aren't centralized. Michaelas10 (Talk) 19:54, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah sorry, I didn't fix it when I typed it (had to leave). It's done now (trimmed the size of the header and aligned center for the headings. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 23:34, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The "Wikipedia in Chinese Languages" is not understandable, please put the English names of the languages in brackets.
It was like that before, but a user opposed to it. I'll put it back again.
  • "Related portals" section: add images, format properly, and place it above the "Associated Wikimedia" section. Remove the "China current events" portal.
I styled this section with reference to Portal:India. Many people dislike clickable images (as in Portal:Germany), that's why I didn't use that format. I personally do prefer the latter format. It's all subject to change.
  • In the "WikiProjects" section: "...the China WikiProject" > "WikiProject China". Shouldn't be spelled otherwise. The Taiwan and Hong Kong WikiProjects shouldn't be bolded.
Done. I bolded those two names to avoid potential protests of "asserting ownership". I've unbolded it now, and hopefully it's okay.
  • Remove the space between the "..." and the text in the "Did you know..." section. No need to bold "(pictured)", make it italic instead like done on the main page. Add a nominations link.
Done.
Spacing and bolding issues still exist. Can you explain why the nomination link is so small? Michaelas10 (Talk) 20:38, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Nominate X" > "Nominate".
Done.
  • Write a "News" section using the provided sources as these are not suitable to be transclused to the portal.
What do you mean? Do you mean that either have news, or else don't transclude news section in portal? I'm confused on this one.
No, I ment that you should write one of your own rather than linking or transcluding these sources. They can be used as a "More" link, but shouldn't fill the section. Michaelas10 (Talk) 18:37, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I meant. I had it that way, but others have suggested that finding Chinese news that's totally unrelated to the Government of People's Republic of China/Republic of China is impossible.
  • The lists don't belong in the "Categories" section, and neither is their category. Please create a new section for them.
Done.

You may double-check to see if these changes were indeed done or weren't saved because of your browser problem. Michaelas10 (Talk) 22:05, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An aesthetic nitpick: The portal as it is right now seems rather... empty. Lots of white spaces around, and a general lack of stuff. If you could fill the little boxes with a light, non-intrusive color that can contrast with the white background, it would seem more complete. -- 我♥中國 03:42, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comment You need to make a new page for resubmittal. See step 4 under Nomination Procedure. Joe I 20:45, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
