I think we'd be on shaky ground claiming this was fair use, especially since there is already a very similar image on the article. Referring to policy #8: Significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. Comment: Hi and thanks for your upload. I'm working on uploading two versions of this image now. It is taking a bit of time because I had to convert the 22 MB tiff to a 4MB jpg. Comment: Hi, and thanks for your request. Is that your flickr page? If so, could you change the license? It currently is "© All rights reserved." And wikipedia doesn't accept copyrighted images (generally speaking). You could log in and change the licenses to either "Attribution Creative Commons" (CC-BY) or "Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons" (CC-SA-BY). Comment: Hi and thanks for your request. Flickr does not have a "public domain" license. The only two licenses that flickr has that are compatible with wikipedia are CC-BY and CC-SA-BY. Furthermore, this appears to be a logo for a website, which would by default make the image copyrighted. Unless you can link to something on this website that states they released the logo into the public domain, then we are going to have to assume it is copyrighted. But we do allow some copyrighted images if they are used under fair use (see WP:NFC). We can tag this image as a non-free logo ({{non-free logo}}), but we'd need a fair use rationale. Comment:. Uploading 6 images is a lot of work, especially because we should probably be using the high resolution versions. Therefore, the TIFFs need to be downloaded, then converted to JPGs, and then uploaded (and on my connection, with files of that size, it takes some time to download and upload). Also, the images should probably be cropped as well to remove the frame. All in all, this is quite a bit of work, while I did it for your first request above, thinking about doing it 6 more times is a little daunting. Are you sure all 6 images are needed for the article? Just to confirm, the copyright holder (usually the person who takes the photo) is the only person who can release the image under a specific license. This material is still copied in books, magazines etc without attribution. The other photograph with the headlamp lens pointing toward the viewer I took of my own bike; the other side was sent to me by the owner and photographer free of (c)copyright. Generally images are in the public domain if they were first published in the US before 1923 or if the author died more than 100 years ago. Even if copyright isn't asserted, it's automatic and to be able to upload an image we need to be able to prove that the image is licensed appropriately for Wikipedia. We'd probably be able to upload the image that you took, and the last image you talked about if you and the person who took the other picture emailed me license forms stating that the images are released under an appropriate license for Wikipedia. I'm not sure if there is an option to change your licensing for your photo album (I know you can with flickr, but I'm not sure about google). Comment: Hi and thanks for your request. Two thing. First, and foremost, our WP:NFC page generally forbids non-free (or fair use) images used to illustrate what a living person looks like. Public figures, like pop singers, are likely to be in situations where a user could reasonably take their picture and upload it under a free license. Therefore, your image fails WP:NFCC #1 and possibly #2. Please consider donating an image under a free license instead (or take a snapshot yourself, or wait for a fan to upload one, or any number of other situations that would result in a free image). Secondly, the article in question is up for speedy deletion, so we should see how that goes to see if there is even an article for this image to illustrate in a couple of days. The image was already upload by another editor almost a week ago. What exactly is the issue here ? At least two users have had no objections in uploading images from Google Books. Is it really nessessary for me to create an account on another website, as opposed to Wikipedia, for every request I make on WP:IFU ? Hi. We don't have an objection to uploading images from Google Books, the problem is that access is restricted from certain countries (like New Zealand where I am), and it takes quite a bit more work to grab an image from Google Books then upload it than having the image there for you to be able to upload - uploading images from Google Books would be much easier if the image was uploaded first on a free host so we didn't have to grab it from Google Books, that would also solve the country issue. If you create an account on Commons you only need to do so once + after setting up Unified login, accounts on other Wikimedia projects are created automatically as you visit them (you could create an account on Wikipedia, then once you visit Commons you'll automatically get an account there). From what I can see, this request wasn't declined. From what you say in your first sentence, the image has been uploaded? That photo is clearly the one I submitted under a different filename. Also it's not nessessary to create a screenshot. There is a blue bar above the displayed page which can be used to crop out pictures. I assume this is what other editors have been doing. All of those images still say "© All rights reserved". Please see http://flickr.com/account/prefs/license. There is an option to change all of your licenses at once. Also, I'm not sure any volunteer here has the time to upload that many files, but in 3 more days you should be able to start uploading files yourself. Also, you should consider uploading your images to Wikimedia Commons instead because a) all free images from the English Wikipedia eventually will be moved there and b) that way different language wikipedias will have access to those images.-Andrew c ^[talk] 14:14, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: Hi and thanks for your request. If we are to use this image under a fair use claim, it must follow WP:NFC. That means, you need to identify what copyright tag to use, and you need to write a fair use rationale to go along with the images. That said, looking at the images, I believe they would probably fail WP:NFCC #1. It is plausible that someone could make an original diagram which would convey the same information. If you are the copyright holder, you are free to release these images under a free license. See WP:ICTIC for some suggestions. If you release the image under one of these images and demonstrate you are the copyright holder, then the images can be uploaded with no problems. If you do not want to release the images under a difference license, and would prefer a fair use here at wikipedia, you'll need to find the most appropriate tag from Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. As I'm not sure exactly what this image is, I apologize for not offering further guidance there. And as I stated above, I'm not sure an image of this nature would even meet our nonfree content guidelines in the first place. I apologize that this is confusing, but as a "free" encyclopedia, we take copyright seriously. We prefer to use similarly free content if at all possible, and then if not possible, we have strict guidelines for non-free image usage. The reason for the upload is to provide some context for the reasons that the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is involved in controversial actions. At the moment two of the photos give a one sided, negative view of the society, a skull and crossbones flag, and a list of ships sunk. The article needs some balance. If we don't have it explicitly stated that this image was released under the terms of a free license, then we have to assume it is copyrighted. Maybe I'm reaching but on the same site I found this collage of pictures [4]. If you look near the top center you can see the picture (with words). Now when you go to this page which has a smaller copy of the same collage and look at the top it states quite clearly "We found 63 results matching harp and seal, licensed under the Creative Commons". On the flickr page, you must have missed the part that says "© All rights reserved". More information on flickr licenses can be found at Wikipedia:Upload/Flickr.
