Christchurch Art Gallery • 14 Feb – 8 Mar 2024
editThe Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū is the public art gallery of Christchurch City, and one of New Zealand's most significant art collections. Funded by Christchurch City Council, it opened on 10 May 2003, replacing the 1932 Robert McDougall Art Gallery. From 11 February to 28 May 2023 it hosted the exhibition Ink on Paper: Aotearoa New Zealand Printmakers of the Modern Era, featuring 49 artists. The hardcover catalogue of the show is out of print, but has been made available as a free PDF download from the Gallery's website. For this reason, Ink on Paper was chosen as the focus of a Wikimedia project.
To do
editImprove Cass (painting) (especially with photographs)✓- Create a list of all New Zealand institutions with Rita Angus holdings, and collate their different copyright and licensing statements
Make sure every artist in Ink on Paper has a Wikidata item✓- Check Wikidata for each artist for completeness
Create a Wikidata item for the Ink on Paper exhibition, modelled on other famous exhibitions and checked against the Cradle template for exhibitions, including the list of artists below✓- (Maybe create an entity schema for exhibits, as there doesn't seem to be one?)
- Where possible make the public-domain (in USA) work of each artist available in Wikimedia Commons
- Create, with the assistance of volunteers, stubs for all the artists featured in Ink on Paper
Run a public meetup and edit-a-thon in the Art Gallery to further improve artist articles✓

Done
edit- Improved Wikidata work and edition for Ink on Paper (1st ed.) (Q118224886)
- Created Peter Vangioni (Q124547198)
- Created Rita Angus: an artist's life (Q124630861), Rita Angus: an artist's life (2008) (Q124630869), and Rita Angus: an artist's life (2020) (Q124630879)
- Improved Cass (painting) from Start to B class
- Created the exhibition Ink on Paper (Q124733840) and Category:Ink on Paper (2023 exhibition) in Commons, adding public domain works following Te Papa's lead
- Improved Cradle template for "Exhibit": substituting exhibited creator (P10661) for participant (P710), and adding a few other useful properties. I've made some notes on what a good exhibit in Wikidata should look like here.
- Surprisingly, Ink on Paper (Q124733840) seems to be the best-documented museum exhibit in Wikidata. There are many art gallery shows from MoMA in Wikidata, with long lists of exhibitors, but they all have about 7 properties; Ink on Paper has 17. I've added it as a model item (P5869).
- Checked all the artists for their copyright status: note that works produced pre-1929 can be uploaded to Commons as PD-US-expired (if PD in NZ and the artist died over 70 years ago), or to Wikipedia as PD-US-expired-abroad (if not yet 70 years, even if PD in NZ).
- Created a spreadsheet of works that might be eligible to go into Commons (although some are still © in NZ, so negotiation with the copyright owner about an open licence would be needed).
- Improved May Gilbert after it was threatened with deletion, using the reference We Learnt to See (2004) (Q126800974) (created in Wikidata along with co-author and publisher).
- Worked with Tim Jones to get the actual objects list for the show (different from the list of works in the Ink on Paper book) and make it available for download from the exhibition page (a first).
- Possible new project: the 1906–07 International Exhibition in Christchurch, as the Art Gallery has a to-be-scanned book on it
