These are working notes for the New Zealand Wikipedian at Large residency at the National Library of New Zealand, Jan–Feb 2019.

Wikidata project

edit

Goal: to create a Mix'n'Match authority list from the Alexander Turnbull Library to link to Wikidata. Meeting with Jay, Nicola Frean, and Siobhan:

  • Create a NLNZ Wikidata property with an ATL qualifier (proposal here)
  • Jay to generate about 2000 records of well-referenced individuals with birth and death dates, ideally authors: good candidates for Wikidata notability
  • Mike to upload to Mix'n'Match and recruit volunteers

Whites Aviation collection

edit

A collection of 76,596 photographs from 1920–1988 which the NLNZ owns the copyright for; they would be happy to release the pre-1954 images into Commons as No Known Copyright, and the remainder under CC BY license. Best solution: release the whole collection as CC BY, with the secondary template noting these are in the public domain in NZ.

  • Show Amy this possible template, and check that the legal statements are correct
  • Mike to organise a large Pattypan project

(NB: Not all the images are aerial photographs: This image of Mayor Appleton could be added to c:Category:Will Appleton's part of the Wellington City Archives "Mayors of Wellington" project.)

Raper watercolours

edit

To accompany a blog post by Dr Oliver Stead on the 68 newly-digitised George Raper Australian natural history watercolours from 1788–1790. These high-resolution files are the best reproductions of Raper's watercolours ever made.

  • Mike to fix George Raper category (removing the page)
  • Mike to create a good sample template for the works, taking the best from the current SLNSW and NHM templates
  • Jay and Oliver to supply the images and links to ATL metadata
  • Mike to upload via Pattypan – check TIFFs vs JPEGs
  • Organise an editing event to clean up and link the metadata, use the images on Wikipedia articles
  • Create Wikidata items for each painting using the Sum Of All Paintings guide

Uploading National Library photos

edit

Beginning the process of uploading photos taken by staff photographer Mark Beatty, of events and building interior/exterior, under a standard NZ Department of Internal Affairs CC BY 4.0, as recommended by NZ GOAL legislation.
