Objectives and outcomes
editNational Library of Scotland's Mission | Wikimedia UK's Mission |
---|---|
Enrich lives and communities. Encourage and promote lifelong learning, research, and scholarship. Provide universal access to information by comprehensively collecting and making available the recorded knowledge of Scotland. Promote access to the ideas and cultures of the world. |
To help people and organisations build and preserve open knowledge, to share and use freely. |
Public outreach
editObjective: Delivery of 3+ public workshops for editors (i.e. edit-a-thons); help organise and host other Wikimedia related events for members of the public, Wikimedians, researchers and librarians such as workshops, Edit-athons, meetups, backstage pass tours
- 5th Month Outcomes:
- Two successful edit-a-thons were held in Scotland in November/December, which were not organised or hosted by the NLS but which the NLS supported by providing access to digital resources and sending the Wikimedian in Residence for training or assistance:
- The Scottish Women on Wikipedia edit-a-thon, held 16 November at the Bridgeton Library (hosted by the Glasgow Women's Library and run by User:Graeme Arnott: 11 participants created 3 new articles and expanded 1, with 1 still in progress
- The RSE/MRC Women in Science Edit-a-thon, held 3 December at the Royal Society of Edinburgh: 21 participants created 14 new articles and expanded 4
- The Wikimedian in Residence travelled to Cambridge to provide support and training for the Women in Science edit-a-thon at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology on 25 November
- 15 participants created 4 articles and expanded 5
- As part of Book Week Scotland, the NLS hosted several public events in the Reading Room on George IV Bridge including a Wikimedia in your Hands workshop where visitors were encouraged to make fast, small edits using the available reference works. Originally designed as a competition, the drop-in nature of the event meant that it ended up being more relaxed and chocolate was just given to all participants.
No new accounts were created, but six participants made contributions to articles including LinkedIn, Gold Coast, Queensland, and the Highland Clearances. Four of the participants were women, and two expressed interest in continuing to edit Wikipedia and in continuing to use the Library.
- Organisation for the Anybody But Burns Edit-a-thon has progressed: the date has been set for 25 January and the venue has been booked at the NLS (George IV Bridge). The events page has been created and promotion is under way.
Staff workshops and events
editObjective: Organise and host workshops for Library staff to explain how they can directly contribute their knowledge and expertise to develop Wikipedia articles; deliver 7+ workshops for National Library of Scotland staff and researchers or related institutions
- 5th Month Outcomes:
- No staff training events were held in month 5 of the residency as there were several public events being planned and run, however staff did attend the Book Week Scotland event and the RSE/MRC Women in Science Edit-a-thon
- Plans to arrange a Wikipedia training session in the new year for front of house and reference services staff as part of an existing monthly training series have been discussed based off of expressed interest
Contributor communities
editObjective: Help establish relationships with the Scottish Wikimedia community, editors and projects
- 5th Month Outcomes:
- The third successful Wikimeet Glasgow was held on 1 December, timed to coincide with The Electron Club's Open Day Social at the Centre for Contemporary Arts
- Wikimedia volunteers and the Wikimedian in Residence attended an Open Knowledge Foundation Scotland meetup in Edinburgh on 21 November
- Meetings between Wikimedia volunteers and OKFN Scotland volunteers resulting in the proposal of a Datafest Scotland 2014 event
Material for future digitisation
editObjective: Explore adding digital resources such as digitised books, articles, photographs and posters to Wikimedia Commons; work with staff, including librarians and curators, to identify areas of Wikipedia and sister projects that could be enriched with resources and knowledge from the Library’s collections
- 5th Month Outcomes:
- While it had been hoped that the upload of NLS Flickr images to Commons as part of an open access trial would take place this month, this has been pushed back to the new year due to timing constraints.
