Trainee Information
editThis training session will introduce you to editing a Wikipedia article using the visual editor and Wiki mark-up, outline key policies and guidelines for contribution, demonstrate referencing technique, and offer the opportunity to practice contributing to an article. Computers will be provided; please identify in advance an article which you would like to contribute to, and at least one source to use. Source can be print or digital. If you can bring (on a USB stick or in an e-mail file) an image or photo which you are comfortable and able to release on a CC 3.0 license, it would be helpful but is not necessary.
Please register for a Wikipedia user account before the training session in order to avoid restrictions set by the Wikimedia Foundation on the number of accounts that can be created from one IP address in a given time. Registration takes very little time and you are free to include as much or as little personal information as you are comfortable with. Your username need not be in any way related to your own name, if you prefer anonymity. It is recommended that you include an e-mail address when registering, as this will allow you to recover any forgotten passwords etc.
You may wish to look at the Wikimedia information booklet (specifically designed for NLS staff; see right) for an advanced look at what will be covered during the training session, but this is not necessary.
Examples for contribution
editA relatively easy way to practice editing is to contribute to existing shorter articles or stub articles. For example, you could compare the less commonly known entries in the Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen collection to the Wikipedia entries on the same, to see whether you can help expand or enhance the Wikipedia articles on those figures. See:
It is best if you identify an article which you can easily make a small, but relevant, contribution to using material to which you have easy access, but you are also welcome to use one of the above examples during training.
