Projects delivered
editStrategic Goal 1
editIncrease the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content
Outcomes
editMy proposed property English Short Title Catalogue citation number has been created on Wikidata. These identifiers are used across many libraries, including the British Library and in Bodleian Library research projects. This property will allow data about book editions to be imported from sites including the Oxford Text Archive.
Partnerships
edit- The Negotiated Texts Network have educational links about participants in the Constitutional Convention of the United States and I will seek to add these to Wikidata or Wikipedia
- The Cairns library will invite me to give a short session for postgraduate students (in medical fields) in October.
- The Cairns library event will also lead to a meeting with staff involved in Public Engagement with medical research.
Activities delivered in the past month with stats:
edit- "Working with the Open Culture movement" 1.5 hour workshop for library staff: 6 attendees. Evaluation at wmuk:Oxford_libraries_and_museums_May_2015#Library_staff_workshop.2C_May_2017
- 1 hour presentation to medical librarians at the Cairns Library: 16 attendees. Evaluation at wmuk:Oxford_libraries_and_museums_May_2015#Cairns_Library_workshop
- 1 hour presentation for the Department of Psychiatry: 28 attendees
- Short presentation for the Negotiated Texts Network: 7 attendees
Forthcoming:
edit- Editathon on "Women in German Studies", 22 June
Strategic Goal 2
editSupport the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level
Outcomes
editPartnerships
editThere is interest among the GLAM Strategy Implementation Board in doing a pilot project with Wikidata. It would need to be in a topic that crosses multiple GLAM institutions in Oxford (among the four museums, numerous libraries, and botanic gardens) and for which there are high-quality metadata already available. I have been working on a briefing on this.
Activities delivered in the past month with stats:
edit- Lightning talk at meeting of the GLAM Digital Strategy Implementation Board. I discussed Wikidata as a front end for GLAM data and we discussed the possibility of a pilot project with some data from Oxford's GLAMs.
Strategic Goal 3
editTo support the use of the Wikimedia projects as important tools for education and learning in the UK
Outcomes
editPartnerships
editI had an inquiry from a team who are bidding for funding to create a mobile app to teach about Modernism. I explained how connections between people can be modelled in Wikidata, and how it already has useful surface data such as birth and death dates, or dates of publication of major works.
Activities in the last month
editDelivered 2-hour workshop for staff in IT Services, including members of the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) group. Five attendees. Evaluation at wmuk:Oxford_libraries_and_museums_May_2015#IT_Services_workshop
Media (videos, infographics, photos from events)
editThe Work in Progress podcast included a short interview about my work and my volunteering, recorded in the Bodleian Library, at the start of episode 26.
