The goal this month is to add content about indigenous community histories and culture by taking advantage of reusing this list of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community histories which were published by the Queensland Government under a CC-BY licence. The CC-BY licence allows others to reuse the material (i.e. not a copyright violation) PROVIDED that the State of Queensland is attributed as the original creator.
Here's one we prepared earlier: Hammond Island, use it as an example to guide you through the steps involved.
Steps
edit- Find the Wikipedia article in one browser tab and the Queensland Govt web page in another browser tab
- In the Wikipedia article, add an "Attribution" subsection into the References section and write your attribution statement (copy the Hammond Island example but remember to change the title and URL and access date!). Then SAVE
- Copy the text from the government webpage (include the inline citations, e.g. [9] but not the End Notes section -- we'll deal with them later) and paste it into the Wikipedia page in the right location (probably the History section). In the edit summary, include the words CC-BY to alert any reviewers that this is NOT a copyright violation. Then SAVE.
- Now go through your copied text and replace any inline citations that you copied over (e.g. [9]) with Wikipedia citations by copying the individual citations from the End Notes section of the government web page and then in Wikipedia, do Cite > Basic form > paste > Insert, to create the citations. Remember to remove the old inline text [9]. Save frequently as you do this. Tip: add in the Wikipedia citation BEFORE deleting the inline text e.g. [9] as it makes it easier to remember where the new citation is to be created.
- Now for each of the paragraphs of copied text, despite having attribution, we need to specifically cite the government webpage it came from. Do a Cite > web etc to create the first one at the end of the first paragraph of copied text. Then you can copy that citation and simply paste it to the end of all the other copied paragraphs. Save!
- Now go through the Wikipedia article and add wikilinks to other Wikipedia articles it mentions. Do any "tidy up" that is required along the way. Save frequently!
- Finally, if there was any pre-existing history in the Wikiepedia article, you need to merge it into your larger history narrative. Try to retain any pre-existing citations in the process (unless they would be duplicates).
