Paisley School of Arts | Est. 1838 : A Living Archive ProjecteditThis project is a collaboration between the University of the West of Scotland, Renfrewshire Council (CHEF) and WMUK, which aims to share and develop local stories which connect to the Paisley area and it's rich creative history. The project focuses on Paisley School of Art, after the discovery of an archive paper which noted public desire for an Arts School in Paisley, by Paisley Philosophical Institution, in 1838. The momentum for Paisley School of Arts grew over the following years, with several activities and efforts put in place to foster the provision of arts education in Paisley. This culminated with the opening of a Government registered Art School in Paisley, to serve the local community from the 1840's onwards. The project celebrates this largely unknown history of creative arts education in Paisley, which has a significant timeline attached. The development of Paisley School of Arts evolved through the years: from its origins as ‘Paisley School of Art’ on 14 Gilmore Street, to then grow in size to form the ‘School of Arts and Science’; leading to the amalgamation with local technical education provision to form the ‘Paisley Technical College and School of Art’ on Gordon Street; and now having developed as part of the multi-campus educational presence of the ‘University of the West of Scotland’.
