SVG out of Open Office?

- Eugene Zelenko suggested that I use SVG format for drawings, instead of .png or .pdf, while writing the Wikibook Clock and Data Recovery.
- I tried to comply with the suggestion, which makes a lot of sense, but failed. See an example.
- The drawings are originated from a simulation software written with Open Office Calc (I wanted all the material of the book to be transferable to whomever shows interest).
- I suspect that Open Office exports poorly to SVG, but it is not possible to convert from O/O the simulation program that costed me a lot of effort (except maybe to MS Excel..).
- If you can help, I could mail the intermediate version of the diagram that is put together from Open Office Calc to Open Office Drawing, as well as another version of the .svg exported from it that uses only Déjà vu serif for the texts.
- Suggestions on how to go from Open Office Calc to a good looking SVG file in Wikimedia Commons and Wikibooks are my request. -- Pierandrea Borgato 14:57, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

- It always helps if one can test with the actual file. Sometimes I export as pdf and then open it in Inkscape. After that you often have to work a bit with the text and sometimes lines and stuff like that. But as I said, one really needs the files to be able to say anything. --Goran tek-en (talk) 19:05, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
The Prismatic World Tour
edit- Request
Someone who please design the logo of the musical tour, Katy Perry's (The Prismatic World Tour), preferably with a white shiny (prismatic) and the SVG transparent image background.
Thanks.--C.Jonel (talk) 05:32, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
I don't understand your request. If you're asking for the text portion that says "Prismatic" to be extracted as an SVG, we really need a vector source to base it on, perhaps from a PDF or similar. Unless you can locate such a source, there's no way of doing this without trying to trace it and end up misrepresenting the logo. NikNaks talk - gallery 14:38, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
- Create a logo in SVG (The Prismatic World Tour). It is just that. --C.Jonel (talk) 23:27, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
- The logo (here, not on Commons) contains a photograph of Katy Perry. There is no way that the entire logo could be rendered correctly as an SVG for this reason. Hence, is your request to have an SVG of the text portion of the logo? Because if you are requesting the entire logo to be rendered, it is not possible. - Right, so you only request the text portion. Are you aware of any PDF files containing information about the tour that might contain the logo? NikNaks talk - gallery 16:09, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

- Just checking, have you incorporated all data points between April 2014 and December 2014 into the chart? We should import all of them, but it's quite hard to see whether that's the case on the updated chart itself, and the lines seem to be be a bit too straight after June 2014 or so. By the way, all those data points are available here. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 07:29, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- Take a better look at the data: data from 07 Jul. 2014 to 02 Nov. 2014 are without KitKat, so I've estimated values for this period by adding % of proportional growth of KitKat and recalculating. --Victor•talk 01:54, 14 December 2014 (UTC).
- For some (strange) reason, the androidpolice.com search linked above lists the data point articles for some months in 2013 instead of the same months in 2014; for example, what's visible there for "02 Nov" is actually the November 2013 article. However, the 2014 articles are there, it just takes some more searching to find them. The right links for the April–December 2014 data points would be as follows:
- April 2014
- May 2014
- June 2014
- July 2014
- August 2014
- September 2014
- There's no data for October 2014, as stated here
- November 2014
- December 2014
- It's weird why the androidpolice.com search lists articles that way; with the links above, we have the 2014 data points, including the KitKat stats. The chart should be corrected, for all Android versions; sorry for missing to provide the right links in the first place, I've also missed that the search provides 2013 data for some of the months. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 03:24, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- By the way, the reason for such search results actually isn't weird, it's simply because the androidpolice.com article titles diverted from their usual naming scheme during a few months (July–November 2014, as it seems). The December 2014 article went back to the usual naming scheme. :) — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 03:30, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- OK, will correct. Are you still thinking about updating illustrations in Unix-like article? --Victor•talk 05:26, 14 December 2014 (UTC).
- Thank you! About the lack of October 2014 data, should we simply omit that month from the chart? I'd say that not including it at all, with a note in the file's description, would be better than interpolating some numbers. Regarding the illustrations for the Unix-like article, sure thing, that's on my to-do list; it's going to be somewhat time-consuming, so I need to finish a few other things here first. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 05:39, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

- Hmm—just thinking aloud—maybe that on-chart note would be a slight overkill? I don't think that androidpolice.com would be interested in renaming already published articles, but please feel free to let them know if you find that as something they'll put into use. :) — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 09:30, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

- Request taken by Goran tek-en (talk) 18:08, 4 April 2015 (UTC).
- With some editing of the code I got the file to open now. The text there is not real text but outline which seems a bit unpractical. Maybe the diagram is generated in another program and then exported as svg, but the code said it was an Illustrator file so I don't really know what to think.
- Any why I'm now changing the text to be real text and now I got to the date at the x-axis.
- Do you want it in that shape MM/DD/YYYY which it is right now. To me it's an USA way to write date. Tell me how you want the date written? --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:11, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
- Awesome, thank you! Speaking of the date format, the primary article this chart is used in, Android version history, uses MDY date format (for which MM/DD/YYYY is a more compact variant), so it should be the best to continue using that date format. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 21:37, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
- Now I finally got the file to pass as valid W3-code. I have made a few other changes in the file also, if you want anything changed let me know.
- Is not time soon to break this diagram into several ones. Lets say one from 2009-2013 and then with one year overlap (2013) 2013-2017 and so on. It's getting very long and hard to overview, in the key it will be to many versions and eventually it will be hard to pick new colors. This is just my thought. --Goran tek-en (talk) 19:04, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you very much!
- Regarding the size of the diagram, it should be fine for at least a few more years. Many articles include somewhat similar timelines, quite often spanning over ten years, as it's actually useful to have everything in one place. Also, the colors will be already picked as something easily distinguishable in the Android version history article, :) as the chart colors are actually the colors of various per-API-level subsections in that article. Finally, there are no similar neigboring colors and old Android versions slowly disappear over time, so the chart should stay readable.
- With that in mind, could you please change the color for 5.0 "Lollipop" to #1FAEDE, as that's what the Android version history article uses for Android 5.0? Also, we should include data points for both February 2015 and March 2015; if I'm not wrong you've included only the March 2015 data, while plotting it as the February 2015 data?
- Also, it would be great to include percentages on the right side of the chart as well; there's no axis there, of course, but that would make the chart much more readable. Either that, or making the division lines more visible and included for each 10% mark – I'd leave the choice to you. :)
- Oh, and "Jellybean" should be written as "Jelly Bean", while having "Ice Cream Sandwich" span two lines is rather confusing: we should either have braces for all Android versions and single instances of their full names (as in the previous chart version), or full version names in all places. Hope you agree. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 01:07, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
- Didn't understand that you updated every month until now, as just every second is marked on the axis. I have realized my mistake before regarding ICS and it's corrected as the other things. - Graphist opinion(s)
- In fact some parts of the image are SVG (the two graphs themselves are not but all of the labels are). I uploaded it (see above). The trick is to save the page source and edit it to only include the
<svg>
element (plus you should add an XML declaration). I additionally extracted the two PNG images, losslessly compressed them, and re-added them to the document to bring down the file size to something reasonable. --Patrick87 (talk) 17:57, 12 April 2015 (UTC) (P.S. In such a case using a screenshot would have been OK, too since much of the content is rasterized anyway. However remember to choose the PNG file format for diagrams, since it's offering lossless compression without compression artifacts and therefore even results in smaller file size.)
- @User:Patrick87 Thank you for the SVG and also the explanation! by the way, how did you extracted the PNG images? are they embedded in the SVG? do I need an SVG editor or is it possible with text/html editors? could you please also extract the PNG from this SVG (source). k18s (talk) 19:16, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
- Basically all you need to extract the images is a text editor (although the HTML inspector included in most modern browsers makes it even a little more convenient). Open the SVG (or the HTML-page that includes the SVG respectively) and search for the
<image>
element that contains the PNG you want to extract (e.g. in Firefox you could right click on the image -> Inspect, and the correct element will be already highlighted). Copy the whole content of thexlink:href
attribute (it looks something likexlink:href="data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0..."
, with everything from the comma being the base64 encoded binary data of the PNG). You can paste thedata:image/png;base64,iVBORw0...
part (without quotes) into the location bar of your browser and it should display just the image you want which can then be saved using "save page" in your browser.
Alternative: Extract the image from the PDF file using the command line tool "pdfimages" which is included in the Xpdf package. --Patrick87 (talk) 19:56, 12 April 2015 (UTC)- Thank you Patrick87. - Hi, the above article has a poor quality (in terms of image and the actual item that was photographed) image of this division's shoulder flash. Would someone be able to knock up a wiki-friendly version based off this better version, from the Imperial War Museum? link. Please note that the red dots around the edges of the flash are cutting guides, and do not need to be included. Also, can the black border be made uniform so we have a perfect square with the red ship in the middle? Kind regards EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 01:37, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- I tried it two different ways. The 'vector1' file (on the left) is me taking some liberties with the shape of the wave to make it more symmetric. The 'vector2' file (on the right) is a more accurate tracing of the .png file; I scaled the .png to 216% and took a best effort at tracing the outlines, including the somewhat irregular wave and waterline of the boat. It's not quite square, if that's an issue. Let me know what you think. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 05:29, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

- I'm not very good with shading; I added another layer in Inkscape with some overlaid lines, but it looks a bit ... amateurish. Help! Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 21:35, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the attempt. If another editor is not able to lend a hand, i dont see why we could not use the version you had before the shading. Regards.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 23:28, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
- I can try to see if I can help but I need more info first. @EnigmaMcmxc: You have provided two sources and they are not the same, there is a big difference in shapes and so on.
- So you will have to tell me which one you want me to redraw.
- Secondly you are asking for some shading which I can see in the current one. Is that what you want even if you say I should use the one from War museum.
- You will have to ping me as the watch doesn't work all the time, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:03, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Goran tek-en:@Mliu92:. Hi guys, per Goran's comments above I re-reviewed the flash on the IWM website, as well two additional copies that are available there. None have the shading in the sails, all that can be seen is the material they are made from. So with that said, I drop the request for shading. Can the pre-shading version be uploaded for use, as as far as I can tell it would be the most accurate and inline with original request. Sorry for the hassle.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 20:34, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- @EnigmaMcmxc: I reverted to the pre-texture/shading version – no worries, this was very easy! @Goran tek-en: thanks for stepping up to help as well. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 22:01, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

- I can try to see if I can help but I need more info first. @EnigmaMcmxc: You have provided two sources and they are not the same, there is a big difference in shapes and so on.
- Thanks for the attempt. If another editor is not able to lend a hand, i dont see why we could not use the version you had before the shading. Regards.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 23:28, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
- I'm not very good with shading; I added another layer in Inkscape with some overlaid lines, but it looks a bit ... amateurish. Help! Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 21:35, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks very much, I do believe I will go for the second one. Is it possible to get the shading in the main sails?EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 12:49, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
Done EnigmaMcmxc I just uploaded a version with shading. If you don't like, feel free to revert. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 14:52, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

- At the bottom, under the Catholic Church line, we have "1878 Restoration of the Scottish Hiercachy". Please fix the last word to "Hierarchy". It's just a .png file, but Windows Paint will mangle the file's transparent background if I try to fix it myself. Nyttend (talk) 16:04, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
Done @Nyttend: I fixed the PNG, but wanted to make sure you were aware there is a SVG version File:Churches of Scotland timeline.svg. This is a vector version which can scale to any size without distortion. Because of this SVG versions should be used in place of PNG versions as long as the SVG is not of poor quality.Offnfopt(talk) 19:07, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
I would appreciate, if someone could vectorize and translate this schematics into English. The structural formulas are already redrawn as SVG (File:Adamantane acsv.svg, File:TBBA.svg).--Kopiersperre (talk) 10:58, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

- Would someone be able to make the following two symbols for some road signs I'm working on? They're a bit above my abilities, but I'd be very happy to attribute whoever can help me. The symbols are this one and this one. As you can see they're on a grid of 9 by 9 with each square being 50 and the width of the symbol also being 50. You can upload them onto File:Test.svg if you like, not really any need to upload them as their own files. Thank you. Fry1989 eh? 23:20, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- @Fry1989: I sketched these up ('Dogleg Left Graphic.svg' and 'Winding Road Graphic.svg') – let me know if they work. The .png sources were somewhat cryptic so I took some liberties with the curves (e.g., eyeballed to look reasonable). Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 01:29, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
- Those are perfect, thank you :) I can do right angles like on File:Philippines road sign W1-1 L.svg, but these curves are beyond me. I'll link you on the file product for your assistance. Fry1989 eh? 01:41, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

- Can someone update the flag coat of arms using the coat of arms I provided at the right side. I tried to merge it but everytime I want to upload the new version, there is something popped out like this → "This SVG file contains an illegal namespace "&ns_ai;".". ~ Muffin Wizard ;) 14:11, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

@Muffin Wizard: Can you open the SVG file you get a error on with a text editor and copy and paste it in to the HTML box on http://jsfiddle.net/ then click the save button and paste the link to the site here (should look something like http://jsfiddle.net/xxxxxxxx/)Offnfopt(talk) 16:22, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Muffin Wizard: I uploaded your file after making some changes to it. When you go to save in inkscape there should be a option that says save optimized SVG, if you use that option it should take care of most of these type of problems. Offnfopt(talk) 13:54, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

- Hi guys, can one of you awesome chaps knock up a vectorized version of this divisional flash? The above is the image already in the article. The following is the one from the Imperial War Museum website: link. Note, that the IWM version has additional stars/dots/bezants above Excalibur: can these be included. As for colours, as i note a difference in red tones, can we go for the one off the website? As for orientation, Excalibur is suppose to be pointing in the air as the above uploaded image indicates. In addition, can the following (link) also be traced and uploaded: It is hard to find images of the men of these divisions, and i think this would provide a nice image for the article - showing the evolution (if you like) of the divisional flash as well as improving the Devon and Cornwall County Division (The already uploaded version. Note the inferior make compared to the IWM version and the lack of bezants: File:Cornwall County Division Insignia.jpg ) article the one for the 73rd Brigade (if it ever gets created) - if nothing else can be found of the divisional chaps.
Kind regardsEnigmaMcmxc (talk) 22:00, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- @EnigmaMcmxc: Here's a vector version (traced from the IWM .jpg, not the existing Wikimedia .jpg) for the 77th Infantry Division, let me know what you think. The shapes in the hand/fingers were difficult to discern from the IWM picture.
- I'll try to tackle Devon & Cornwall later this week. For Devon & Cornwall, does the hilt and top edge of the shield generally slope up from left to right (as in the IWM jpg, with the point down as per the description) or does it slope down from left to right (as in the existing Wikimedia version)? Or should there even be a slope? Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 07:27, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
- Upon further examination of the Devon & Cornwall jpg from IWM, it appears the diagonal weave of the fabric has warped the pattern over time, after the divisional flash was printed. I applied a small vertical skew (think of making a rectangle into a parallelogram by shifting one side vertically) to make the stars on the field square and that effectively made the shield and hilt perfectly horizontal. I'll proceed with the de-skewed version. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 14:30, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
- @EnigmaMcmxc: Vector version for Devon & Cornwall uploaded. The bordering stars are somewhat cut off on the IWM jpg. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 15:48, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
