These .png files created by TwinsMetsFan have all been recreated as .svg files posted to the Commons. All links to the .png files have been replaced, so they are orphans. TwinsMetsFan indicated after a previous nomination of 20 on 29-Jan that he would have speedy tagged the images. Based on this discussion I am bringing all of them here in a mass nomination. I have notified TwinsMetsFan of this mass nomination by posting a link on his talk page to here. — BigrTex 01:25, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Copyright violation, WP:FU counterexample 5. The image is used only for illustration of an article on a related topic. A free replacement can probably be found. Contrary to the description page, the image is still being used by CNN at the source URL. —xyzzyn 01:56, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you belive that a free image can be found than find it. That goes tthe same for all of the other artilces you deleted the images from you have left bare dry the whole Iraq war article without any images except for a few that were made by the DoD. Tell me will the Iraq war article be even without one image of the Iraqi insurgents, not one image, just because their pictures are taken by the press only. Just because of that there will be no images of them and they are the main guys that are bleading the Americans so bad over there right now. —Top Gun 04:49, 3 February 2007 (UTC) Delete: Rights of Copyright holder override inconvenience of no free image available. • Image is claimed to be PD under the PD-art rubric. However, it is a photograph of a three-dimensional work of art (a vase). PD-art is therefore not applicable, as it applies only to two-dimensional works. No source or alternative licensing is given. — ChrisO 20:04, 2 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]
    • Keep It is not a picture of a vase, as the vase is not depicted in its entirety. It is a picture of a two dimentional drawing on a vase. The pottery is merely a medium on which the drawing is made. To claim that this is not a 2D picture because it exists on a 3D object totally nullifies the PD-Art tag, and calls for the deletion of all images under that tag nothing is really 2D in the real world - every canvas, wall or piece of paper is in, fact, three-dimensional. Where the focus is clearly on the 2D drawing, and not on the 3D medium, the PD-art licence clearly applies. A quick check of PD-Art tagged images reveals many wall paintings and even some bas-relief images (like this one, unchallenged since 2002: [1]). sys < in 21:14, 2 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]
      • I'm sorry, but Wikipedia's policy (and the relevant legal precedent - Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.) is quite clear - the PD-art object must be two-dimensional. An image of an old painting or drawing would qualify as it would be a "slavish copying" of a flat two-dimensional image (to quote Bridgeman) without any original input being required. However, an image of a three-dimensional object will always require originality (the criterion for copyright to apply). In this instance we have a two-dimensional image painted onto a three-dimensional object - it can't be "slavishly copied" as the photographer has to make a conscious choice of which side to photograph, so the image counts as an original copyrighted work. There is no way around this. I'm not going to get into discussions of other images, btw - let's focus on this one. -- ChrisO 22:00, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Where is the vase from (when was it made) and who is the photographer? —xyzzyn 21:38, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Your comments regarding pictures of 2-dimensional objects are correct, but the prohibition on pictures of 3d art is only when it is a picture of copyrighted artwork. This greek vase is obviously not artwork recently created, and is not likely copyrighted under U.S. law. Would pictures of the Parthenon be a violation of U.S. copyright law? How about of the statue of David? Atom 06:36, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Is that really an ancient object or is it a fake? In the latter case, it might be still copyrighted, making any photograph a derivative work. Even in the former case, the photograph is of a three-dimensional work and therefore is copyrighted itself, but we do not know who holds the copyright, much less whether it was released as PD. —xyzzyn 12:09, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Indeed. All we can do is speculate. (which is not helpful in this case) The photographer probably knows the origin. If it were a fake, it might, and might not be covered under copyright. (If I made a statue myself that was a copy of the Statue of David, that would not be copyrightable, even though the original is not copyrighted.)
It seems likely that this is a greek statue, and a picture of that would not be a violation of Copyright, as it would not be copyrighted. If the uploader can indicate origins of the vase (as indicated earlier), I would keep. If not, we would need to delete, as we should err on the side of caution with an unknown image. Atom 16:22, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Seems that ChrisO is right. Read the page on the court case. The operative criterion is not really whether it's 2D or 3D, that's just a handy rule of thumb we use in order to be on the safe side. The criterion is whether making the photograph involved a minimum amount of creative decision-making. Which it does, in the case of the surface of a vase. To Atom: you are mistaken; a photograph of an ancient art work establishes copyright on the photograph even if the artwork itself is free. Fut.Perf. 16:07, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course. I am confused apparently. If the ancient art object is not copyrighted, and the photographer offers the photograph under PD, then why are we deleting it? I don't believe the claim here is that the uploader is using someone elses copyrighted photograph. The issue is that some believe that the freely offered PD photo is possibly a photo of 3D artwork that may be itself copyrighted. If neither is copyrighted then why is PD-art not applicable? Is it an issue of merely using a different category for PD submission? Atom 23:27, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The issue isn't whether the art object is copyrighted - it's whether the photograph is copyrighted. A photograph of a 3D artwork can never be republished under PD-art, because PD-art only applies to 2D artworks. As for whether the photograph is copyrighted, because the uploader has provided no information about where it comes from we simply can't tell that it's "freely offered". It's pretty likely that the uploader is not in fact the original photographer, otherwise he would have said by now. In other words, while the claim is not that the uploader is using someone else's copyrighted photograph, it's highly likely that this is in fact the case. -- ChrisO 23:48, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. If we can't establish source/rights of the photograph, and it is not inherently PD, we can't use it, as you said. Atom 23:52, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for identifying the probable source of the photo (http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/Sterile/Images/hoplite.jpg ). However, this is plainly not an acceptable image. There's no attribution, no statement of copyright and it seems to be hosted on the website of the University of Rochester Medical Center's Sterile and Materials Processing Department for some reason. It's plainly a copyright violation, so I've nominated it for speedy deletion. -- ChrisO 00:31, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
