Personally, I would have tolerated a reasonable amount of such images, as long as the user contributes to Wikipedia. The user has now apparently abandoned the account and now edits as User:IslaamMaged126; it would have been appropriate to ask her if she wants to have them preserved. How would leaving the article blank of any image be anything but detrimental to the article. There are no free-use images of the deceased available, and none can be created as he was murdered. This image is iconic in the sense that it was the image most used by news reports and most associated with the deceased. Being that having an image of a notable person is vastly preferable to permanently leaving the article blank, and being that a fair use version is impossible to obtain, this is a classic example of fair use. -- Avi (talk) 21:39, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Detrimental to the article" is not the formulation used in the Wikipedia criteria. The correct formulation is "detrimental to the understanding [of the topic]". In what way is the removal of the Halimi image detrimental to the understanding of this? Or put in another way, in what way does the image "significantly increase readers' understanding"?? Images are integral to biographical articles, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography. Where free-use images are truly impossible to be obtained, as in this case the article subject is deceased, fair-use images are acceptable. I notice you have not marked the five examples of fair-use images of people of Arab descent, which I provided for you on your talk page, and which I think are acceptable for wikipedia use (with the possible exception of the one still living) for deletion, including one which is still alive and for which it is remotely feasible that a free-use image may be obtained. I read Wikiproject Biography and the only phrase I could find om images was the follówing: "Add images such as those obtained from Wikimedia Commons, image list, or by posting a request for an image from other editors." Media-specific policy: Passes (Properly tagged, rationale given, and linked to article.
One-article minimum: Passes (Used in Ilan Halimi).
Significance: Passes (A picture of a person is undeniably important in understanding that person. To say otherwise is borderline absurd in my opinion).
Restrictions on location: Passes (Solely in article namespace).
Image description page: Passes (Image page has all requisite material).

Comment - That's a picture of Gleaves Whitney, director at the Hauenstein Center of Presidential Studies interviewing President Jimmy Carter. I'm guessing the uploader took the image from their website, where all images are released under a license incompatible with the GFDL. Having said all that, I would still vote for deletion since the image can't be used under its license here, isn't especially important to the Hauenstein article and for all the reasons cited by Nv8200p. Keep. I am the uploader, and I have readded it to the article. The image adds significantly to the article by displaying her 'cute-factor' while on Britain's Got Talent. She is no longer on Britain's Got Talent, and no longer has a 'gap-toothed smile' which is something that many sources (as well as the article) pick up on, meaning that this image is irreplaceable. On top of this, the image is of a low resolution, and has been cropped, meaning that its use will not lessen the value of the original image. This image is not being used as a 'this is what she looks like' image, which is obviously against our fair use rules, and that is the type of image that I have personally either nominated for deletion or deleted myself in the past. Keep. No "free equivalent" can be created. The image adds value to the article by actually showing Liz as the Army's first female major general. But it has to be a picture of her as a major general, and therefore cannot be free. Non Free in this case does not prohibit commercial use or redistribution. Keep, this is crazy. Deleting this image unduly promotes "free" at the expense of "encyclopedia". The same shenanigans was played with Image:Liz Cosson.jpg. Many people assessed these images and considered the fair-use rationale to be acceptable. NFCC#1 is intended to prevent copious and unrestricted use of non-free when free images could be created. A free equivalent of this image can not just be created by someone with a few hours on their hands - the only way a free equivalent (i.e. a quality shot like this one) will appear is if the subject or Army allow it, or the subject ends up in a US Government photo. The Press Association? They are a UK based photograph agency. They have lifted the photograph from the very same Department of Defence site. News reporting falls under fair dealing. Does she go to lunch in uniform? Does she ever go shopping in uniform after work? Does she ever attend military-related public meetings or gatherings?     Furthermore, what exactly is necessary of this image to particularly understand any facet of the article? Personal illustration of biographies is excellent where not in conflict with WP:NFCC#1; but if attempting to say that the image is important beyond illustration, that needs to also meet the muster of WP:NFCC#8: "only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." Keep As Cossen is the first woman to achieve her current rank in the Australian Army a picture of her in full uniform is of very great value to the article. Moreover, I'd argue that the official portrait of the first Australian woman to reach the very senior rank of Major General has historical significance. While I guess that it's possible that a free image could eventually be taken of Major Gen. Cossen, it's very unlikely that that's going to ever happen for the reasons Hawkeye and John Vandenberg note above and the nomination seems rather spurious. --Nick Dowling (talk) 09:40, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

- Thank you for your observation. I have corrected the tag. I meant to release to the public the rights to the photo I have taken (a reproduction of the original). The original photo was taken before 1952 and is widely available in the public. I did not mean to claim any rights to the original photo. I am sorry that, due to inexperience, I have placed a tag that someone could interpret differently than I meant. Thank you for your kind observation. I have now corrected the captions of the image.
