  • This is a personal image that was uploaded my me that I would like deleted ASAP - or else face divorce proceedings via my loving, strong and protective husband who thinks I'm going to be stalked, stolen, killed, and/or beaten to a pulp, along with our children (even though they are not in the photo). :p Feel better, honey? I find it highly unlikely that the uploader is Adolf Hitler, and if he is then he should submit an OTRS ticket like anyone else, I don't think self-made can in this case be considered a valid source, and thus the image should be deleted, as the copyright status and authenticity are unverifiable. I'm not sure the wikimedia foundation ever intended for users to violate foreign copyrights simply because it may be legal (or not as the American law only seems to say signatures can't attract copyright in the USA, not that copyrighted signatures loose their copyright in the USA). You realise obviously that Hitler didn't live in the USA, if you read Wikipedia:Copyright it would seem we should try to acknowledge foreign copyrights. Regardless, according to Jimbo Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, Wikipedia contributors should respect the copyright law of these nations as best they can, the same as they do for other countries around the world Jackaranga (talk) 11:51, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The WMF servers reside in the US, hence we are obliged to follow US copyright law. Sometimes the copyright status of a work in the US depends on the copyright status of the work in the country where it was published, but that isn't the case here. It may be nice to respect other copyright laws voluntarily, but it wouldn't be appropriate to delete images on that basis, especially when the issue isn't that the image violates any particular law but just that we (presumably) don't know enough about German copyright law to say with complete certainty that it doesn't. — xDanielx T/C\R 19:01, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about this I hadn't noticed there was already an ongoing deletion discussion for this signature, the uploader User:Dimboukas removed the deletion template from the image page, as he has just done yet again for this nomination. See Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images/2008 April 8#Image:Hitler signature.jpg for the original discussion. The uploader should at least acknowledge the source though, and provide the correct license template, as well as not removing deletion notices. Jackaranga (talk) 12:05, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
