Background

edit

Following the talk by Dr Peacock on "Wikis are Wonderful" at Meetup 16 in May 2015, the Port Adelaide Environment & Heritage Wiki was set up, but in a style parallel to that of Wikipedia, rather than the "Now and Then" model originally envisaged.

The aim of the project is to train a local community of editors, and to capture local content that may not necessarily meet Wikipedia's notability and verifiability guidelines, or its ban on "original research". The intention is that the element of verification will be provided by the community of editors engaging in a more friendly and supportive manner than that experienced in the more anonymous realm of Wikipedia.

Progress has been slow, as it's involved a steep learning curve (importing templates from Wikipedia and getting them to work in the new environment has been a sometimes frustrating challenge!). Disabling anonymous account creation didn't prevent a spambot attack creating a vast number of false user accounts in a short time. To counter this, account creation was disabled, except by request to the administrator (User:Bahudhara).

There has been some interest generated in the project, but so far the actual participation by new editors has been limited. A couple of training sessions were held at the Port Adelaide Library in March. So far, more effort has gone into creating project structure and stub creation, rather than actual content.

Projects underway include:

  • Creating articles on the people whose names are listed on the Workers' Memorial; this is quite timely, considering that the monument's centenary will be celebrated in 2018.
  • Birds of the Adelaide region - currently a deliberately vague title, but meant to attract attention to the proposed Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary, and support for a new community Friends of Parks group.
  • The outbreak of World War I in 1914 resulted in the establishment of the Torrens Island Concentration Camp, and its centenary was recently marked by an exhibition at the Migration Museum and the publication of a book. The Port Adelaide wiki offers an opportunity to delve deeper into the subject and the stories of the men interned, as well as of the German-flagged ships in Australian waters at the outbreak of hostilities which were seized as prizes and transferred to the Commonwealth Government Line.
