Earth Day 50 Virtual Edit-a-thon
editAs part of Boston University's Earth Week celebrations, the Boston University Libraries are hosting a virtual edit-a-thon on Thursday, April 23, 2020, from 3 - 6 p.m. Our event will include a presentation by MIT Librarian and Wikipedia expert Phoebe Ayers on the many sustainability and climate change related initiatives in the Wikimedia Community. Please register by April 22 at 3pm.

- Location: Online through Zoom. We will send a link to Zoom prior to the event. You must register to receive this link.
- Host: Boston University Libraries
- RSVP: Please register by April 22 at 3pm ET.
- Register for a Wikipedia account. Don't have a Wikipedia account? That's ok. Please create one in advance. Wikipedians will be on hand to assist those who need help setting up an account.
Before the event
editWe will show you how to edit during the event, but if you'd like learn more on your own:
- Try some self-paced training if you are a first time or returning editor. WikiEdu has many helpful training resources. Here are a few to get started:
- Wikipedia Policies(25 minutes) provides an overview of Wikipedia's policies. Highly recommended.
- How to edit: Wikicode vs Visual Editor(20 minutes) shows the basics of editing. Highly recommended.

Schedule
edit- 3 - 3:30 p.m.: Welcome and technical troubleshooting
- 3:30 - 4 p.m.: Presentation: Sustainability and Climate Initiatives in the Wikimedia Community, Phoebe Ayers, Wikipedian and Librarian for Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, MIT
- 4 - 6 p.m.: Editing, with the option to join breakout 'rooms' for instruction or projects. This will include a brief training for absolute beginners or others interested from 4-4:30.
Track your participation
editWe will be using a Wikipedia Dashboard to easily track the edits made during this Edit-a-thon. By logging into the dashboard before you start editing, your edits will be automatically tracked, and we'll be able to collect statistics on the work we've done during this editing event.
- Go to Earth Day 50 Dashboard.
- Under Actions, click Join Program.
- Enter the passcode we will provide you with your registration.

Possible Topics for Editing
edit- Expand an environment stub. You can improve stubs by adding a reference or brief information. There are many topic related to sustainability in this project.
- Clean-up an article listed in the WikiProject Climate Change. For new editors, Cleaning up Dead links is often an easy way to edit.
- Sustainable Art Consider adding internal links to this start-class article. Are there other additions that can be made?
- Add missing citations using citation hunt. Try limiting your search to WikiProject Environment or WikiProject Climate change.
