Join us for Wikipedia Loves Libraries! We will work to improve Wikipedia's coverage of urban renewal philosophies and methods in Boston, including neighborhoods and streets affected, key policy makers, and the effects that lasted throughout the city for many years.
When: Tuesday, October 21, 2014, 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM Where: Boston City Archives, 201 Rivermoor Street, West Roxbury, MA 02132. Focus: The history and effects of urban renewal projects in Greater Boston Snacks? Yes! We will provide refreshments. You do not need to be an experienced Wikipedia editor in order to attend, just bring a willingness to learn.

Event Details

In the 1950s, the urban renewal idea hit Boston and affected many different neighborhoods within the city. The redevelopment of Scollay Square into Government Center, the demolition of much of the West End and significant areas in the South End, Brighton, and Charlestown, as well as sporadic improvements. Additionally, road projects such as the Inner Belt and the Central Artery drastically changed the face of the city. This edit-a-thon will focus on neighborhoods and streets affected, key policy makers, and the effects that lasted throughout the city for many years.

About Us

The City of Boston Archives is the repository for all official records that must be kept to document both the history of the municipal government in Boston and the legal rights of its citizens. The City Archives holds records for over 60 current and historic government entities and departments. The bulk of these records consist of documentation of the history of Boston since incorporation as a city in 1822, although some records go back to the early 17th century. Since our inception in 1989, the City Archives has worked to open our city’s rich historic record to researchers of all types and to enable Bostonians to easily access the records that preserve the history of their communities.
