As part of Women's History Month, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Program in Women's and Gender Studies invites members of the MIT community to gather together on March 18th to improve and create Wikipedia entries related to the history of women in the STEM fields. We especially encourage additions that highlight the accomplishments of notable women (or those identifying as female) who have made important contributions to gender equity in STEM research areas. We also encourage a focus on articles relating to gender and technology, including reproductive technology, cosmetic technology, transgender surgery, and the medicalization of the body.

This edit-a-thon is being held in honor of former MIT president Charles M. Vest (1941-2013), who supported a groundbreaking study on the experiences of women faculty in the STEM fields at MIT. The event is organized and sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies program at MIT, and allies.

Cambridge, MA event details

  • Date: Tuesday, March 18th, 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Can’t be there the whole time? No problem. Join us for as little or as long as you like.
  • Venue: Room W20-308, 3rd Floor Coffee House Lounge, MIT Campus, Cambridge, MA, USA. Map
  • Cost: Free
  • Speakers: Maia Weinstock of the New England Wikimedians user group
  • Participants: This meetup is open to all members of the MIT community with valid MIT ID, but space is limited to a maximum of 39 (on-site) attendees. As such, registration is required for the in-person event (details below). No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; the first hour will be devoted to the fundamentals of Wiki editing. As needed throughout the event, tutoring will be provided for Wikipedia newcomers. Female editors are particularly encouraged to attend. Online participants may sign up and participate remotely.

In addition to the suggestions below, editors may consider cleaning up articles on more well-known women STEMmers, such as Rosalind Franklin, Marie Curie, Jane Goodall, Grace Hopper, Elizabeth Blackwell, Emmy Noether or Ada Lovelace herself.
