American Folklife Center’s Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon: Biographical Entries on Women Folklorists, Ethnomusicologists, and Fieldworkers
Join the American Folklife Center on February 8th for an Edit-A-Thon to expand the online presence of women who documented the world. This event is part of its multi-year initiative to highlight, explore, and celebrate the contributions of women as ethnographic fieldworkers and scholars and call attention to the instrumental role of women in establishing many of the seminal collections that now enrich the AFC archive and ethnographic archives throughout the world. During the Edit-A-Thon, we plan to add and/or expand entries for approximately 25-30 women, both historic and contemporary, who documented traditional culture. We will focus of those whose collections are now housed in the AFC archive. Activities will be centered at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, but off-site participation is encouraged. AFC staff will be on hand to assist on-site and off-site researchers and provide archival materials.
No Wikipedia editing experience necessary. Training will be provided.
Laptops are required. Please bring your own. Lunch will be provided.
The American Folklife Center Reading Room is located on the ground floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building, Room G53. Participants can enter through the ground floor “carriage entrance” for researchers. The closest metro stops are Capitol South (blue, orange, and silver lines) or Union Station (red line). 2 hour street parking in the area is limited; participants are highly encouraged to use public transportation to avoid parking issues.
All participants should bring a fully charged laptop, as outlets in the rooms are limited.
Registration is required.
