Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Closing the Gap: Women's History Month Edit-a-thon
Closing the Gap: Women's History Month Edit-a-thon presented by The White House Gender Policy Council & The White House Domestic Policy Council with support from Wikimedia DC
BACKGROUND The White House Gender Policy Council & the White House Domestic Policy Council are hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon with Wikimedia to improve historical representation of women. The goal of this event is to mark Women's History Month by collaborating with a select group of youth organizations to address the gender content gap in Wikipedia entries. Shockingly only 10% of Wikipedia editors are women, and only 20% of Wikipedia profiles are about women, which leads to a systemic bias in how we document history. The solution is to motivate women and girls to create new content, expand the breadth of profiles, find reference materials to cite and fix the credit bias, and remove unconsciously biased language.
EVENT The Edit-a-thon is a virtual event where girls can edit, improve, and/or create Wikipedia content to recognize the contributions of underrepresented women in history. A list of topics will be created in advance so the girls can use the entire event to edit and improve Wikipedia.
Mentors from partner organizations will undergo training in advance to ensure that allotted time is used efficiently. Representatives from the United States Digital Service will be there to help troubleshoot any issues with editing Wikipedia.

Article work list
editInstructions: Choose two articles to edit or create (first choice and second choice). Send the names of the articles you've chosen along with your username to your mentor. Your mentor will notify you to confirm or deny that your first choice is available. Please wait for confirmation before starting your article worksheet.
This list includes articles that need to be created and a few that require improvements. Use your article worksheet to write the lead section (3-5 sentences), when starting a new article. Use the worksheet to make notes of needed improvements when working on existing articles.
Tip: it's easier to prove that your topic is notable if 1) you have a number of sources to support this or 2) the subject of your article was the first to accomplish something. Try starting with an article that meets one or two of the items within this criteria.

edit- Chapters
- Wikimedia chapters are independent organizations founded to support and promote the Wikimedia projects in a specified geographical region (in most cases, a country). Like the Wikimedia Foundation, they aim to "empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally". There are currently 39 chapters, with at least one on every inhabited continent., i.e. Wikimedia DC
- Chapters
- Wikimedia thematic organizations
- Thematic organizations are incorporated independent non-profits representing the Wikimedia movement and supporting work focused on a specific theme, topic, subject or issue within or across countries and regions. i.e., Wikimedia Medicine.
- Wikimedia thematic organizations
- User groups
- Wikimedia user groups are intended to be simple and flexible affiliates that are an alternative to chapters and thematic organizations - which require more formal requirements. User groups are highly valued as equal players in the Wikimedia movement, i.e., Art+Feminism
