Home Rule and the Fight for DC Statehood Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

The struggle for Home Rule and representation in Congress is a central part of the story of Washington, DC. Join the DC History Center and Wikimedia DC for a virtual edit-a-thon to enhance Wikipedia entries relating to key figures and organizations critical to the history of Home Rule and the fight for DC Statehood. Add and edit pages for activists including: Julius Wilson Hobson, Sr., Josephine Dorothy Butler, Hilda Howland M. Mason, and Anise Jenkins, as well as organizations including DC Statehood Party, Stand Up for Democracy / Free DC, DC Statehood Coalition, and Students for D.C. Statehood.

Anyone and everyone interested in learning how to edit Wikipedia, regardless of experience or background, is welcome to virtually attend. Wikimedia DC will provide training for new editors, while experienced editors can start editing right away. All attendees will learn about citable secondary sources that can be used to create and enhance entries relating to Home Rule and DC Statehood on the world's largest reference website. DC History Center staff will be available to answer questions and highlight resources from the DC History Center collections.

Chapters
Wikimedia chapters are independent organizations founded to support and promote the Wikimedia projects in a specified geographical region (in most cases, a country). Like the Wikimedia Foundation, they aim to "empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally". There are currently 39 chapters, with at least one on every inhabited continent., i.e. Wikimedia DC
Wikimedia thematic organizations
Thematic organizations are incorporated independent non-profits representing the Wikimedia movement and supporting work focused on a specific theme, topic, subject or issue within or across countries and regions. i.e., Wikimedia Medicine.
User groups
Wikimedia user groups are intended to be simple and flexible affiliates that are an alternative to chapters and thematic organizations - which require more formal requirements. User groups are highly valued as equal players in the Wikimedia movement, i.e., Art+Feminism
