We will get together to improve Wikipedia content about the Supreme Court of the United States. This includes cases, justices, lawyers, and any interesting tangents. Beginners are welcome! Wikipedia editing training will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there!

Where

PLEASE NOTE: You will be entering a government building and will be required to go through security (a magnetometer). You will need to show a government-issued ID and sign in to come to the Innovation Hub. If you wish to work with original records you must have a NARA researcher card. If you do not have one, there will be an opportunity to sign up for a card. More information here.

What to bring
  • A laptop computer
  • Valid ID
  • Any resources you would like to reference
  • You're welcome to bring your camera and take pictures
  • You may also bring a personal scanner (without a document feeder)
  • Preferably, a registered Wikipedia user account (but we can also create one on the spot)
Schedule

Come in the morning, afternoon, or both!

  • 10 a.m. – Breakfast and overview of Edit-a-Thon goals
  • 10:15 Getting Started with Editing Wikipedia presentation by editor Sarasays
  • 11 a.m. – David Ferriero, Archivist of the United States, will drop by for a quick hello and welcome
  • 11ish – Talk by Bob Ellis, NARA expert on Supreme Court Records at NARA Bob's Talk
  • 11ish - Introduce ourselves, as NARA people, Wikipedians, legal specialists
  • All day till 4 or 5 - editing articles of interest, Wikisource, and Wikidata
  • 1 p.m. – We'll bring lunch!

1. "[F]or articles on cases, case law, or subjects which use a large amount of case law, it is recommended that editors use the referencing style for the jurisdiction that heard that case or for which that legal subject applies." In the United States, editors should use "Bluebook, ALWD, or an official state system (i.e., the California or New York systems)."
2. Editors should "[c]ite to legal materials (constitutions, statutes, legislative history, administrative regulations, and cases) according to the generally accepted citation style for the relevant jurisdictions."
