“ Join us at Artsy HQ, 401 Broadway, on Saturday, July 8, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to learn how to edit Wikipedia and add to Wikidata.

Edit-a-thon | We will provide trainings for the beginner Wikipedian, reference materials, and refreshments. Bring your laptop, power cord, and ideas for entries that need updating related to gender, feminism, and art.

Wikidata Hackathon | Technologists are especially welcome at this Edit-a-thon! We'll be utilizing data from The Art Genome Project—a vocabulary for describing the characteristics of art, design, and architecture which powers search and discovery on Artsy—to create structured Wikidata. The goal is to enhance the accessibility of the metadata Artsy’s created by cataloging 27,000 artists.

People of all gender identities and expressions welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Updating Wikidata with data from Artsy

After spending some time familiarizing ourselves with the process of manually creating and editing Items, we moved onto some basic QuickStatement updates.

By the end of the day we were able to enter basic biographical facts from Artsy's CSVs into Wikidata in one fell swoop, by batching up several QuickStatement instructions as follows:

Using pywikibot to update Wikidata

We created a PAWS Python script that would take metadata from the CSVs Artsy provided on Genes and added that data to existing Wikidata documents. You can get our bot on GitHub.

This should provide enough structure for further expansion to multiple genes, and recurring uploads.
