The December 2013 New York City Meetup event was on 1pm Sunday Dec 15, at New York Law School in Lower Manhattan near the Franklin Street (IRT Broadway – Seventh Avenue Line) station.
We met in the lobby of the NYLS building at 185 West Broadway at 1pm, check in with the law school (please bring your IDs!), and then gathered for the Wikimedia NYC meeting in one of the conference rooms.
Afterward many of us walked to a dinner together at a large neighborhood grocery.

Regrets
edit- I'd love to come, but I'll be working. Hope you do more of these meetups on Sundays though. NintendoFan (Talk, Contribs) 07:37, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
- Seeing as how I could not come last time, I will have to take a rain check on this one. Again. Epicgenius (talk) 00:49, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
- Ten inches of snow Saturday, freezing rain Sunday. Can't make the trip in from far suburbia in that mess. Courcelles 12:34, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
- Agree with Courcelles...this time I'd rather be sitting next to the fireplace with a glass of scotch watching the snow fall than be out in it driving.--ColonelHenry (talk) 08:26, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- I wasn't likely to be able to come to begin with, and unfortunately the weather has settled the issue. Daniel Case (talk) 23:47, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Minutes
edit- The meeting started approximately 1:20 PM.
- Initial casual talk coalesced around the phenomenon of seeing one's contributions to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons appear in print. Scottandrewhutchins reported that his contributions have been printed in books. Jim.henderson noted that his pictures have appeared in neighborhood newspapers. He was pleased that others value Wikipedians' products, even without crediting individuals.
- Wiki01Mike spoke about the proposed Harlem edit-a-thon, tentatively planned for Saturday, January 25, 2014. This will take place at the New York Public Library’s Harlem Branch, located at 9 West 124th Street (website: http://www.nypl.org/locations/harlem ). It’s considered the “main” Harlem branch and is heavily-used. Wiki01Mike noted that this edit-a-thon will be in collaboration with the Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association (website: www.mmpcia.org). In comparing lengths of recent edit-a-thons, it was noted that the Harlem Branch is open 10 am to 5 pm, a reasonable amount of time for an such an event. Attendees suggested using the Harlem Renaissance an anchor topic; independently-minded people could pursue their own topics of interest. Specifics (possibility of food, promotion, etc.) are evolving and will be worked out.
- The ‘’’Art and Feminism Edit-a-Thon’’’ is scheduled for Saturday February 1, 2014 to be held at the Eyebeam Art and Technology Center (540 West 21st Street). It is being organized in partnership with other organizations. As an addition to typical edit-a-thon activities, Jihyunb suggested recruiting people from other localities to give reports on what’s happening.
- Jihyunb briefly touched upon the CryptoParty phenomenon as a means of citizen empowerment in dealing with government cyber security. For more information see https://prism-break.org/.
- The Chapter was happy to welcome and hear from Nicole Ebber and Kira Kraemer of Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE) about the meta:Chapters Dialogue project. The page on meta provides a detailed description of the project. In brief, WMDE wanted to explore the nature of relationships between the chapters and the Wikimedia Foundation. Among the questions they wanted to explore were: Do chapters really have that many commonalities? How do we work together to enhance things? Sometimes when the Foundation issues statements, chapters react very differently, which can create tension on occasion, etc.. In order to find out what’s on chapters’ minds, WMDE had the idea to collect not just data (as in a survey) but stories, with the goal of creating a map of the movement which will provide a picture of what’s going on. WMDE: let’s talk to all chapters and stakeholders, Funds Distribution Committee, etc. (all levels of WP connection including geographical chapters, thematic chapters, user groups, etc.) to get an idea of what’s going on, and what’s not going on. They want to also investigate “the community”: some people work with chapters, some people want to stay away from chapters. The methodology they are using is Design thinking – applying design issues to other fields. Conducting research requires “problem reframing” – collecting data, mapping it out, then trying to cluster similar ideas and then synthesize the findings. They want to be highly sensitive of user privacy, so all user information will be anonymized (including details which might indirectly reveal the person offering information). They will deliver an initial report at the meta: Wikimedia Conference 2014 in Berlin in April 10-13, 2014, with expanded information at subsequent venues. Members of the chapter board immediately offered an invitation to our guests to present their findings at WikiConference in June; Nicole and Kira promised to consider the possibility. They encouraged all to "friend" their project on Facebook: http://www.Facebook.com/chaptersdialogue
