This page is the meetup report for Wikipedia Meetup Negeri Sembilan at Perkampungan Raja Teromba on 15 October 2023.
Information learned
edit- Get information about the Minangkabau culture in Negeri Sembilan, especially regarding its history and some current challenges. The information obtained from Assoc. Prof Datuk Paduka Dr Mohd Rosli Saludin, who is an expert in Malaysian Negeri Sembilan culture and awarded with the title "Malaysia's National Heritage Living Person".
- Learn about teromba (a type of Minangkabau poem with melody) through the performance by Datuk Rosli.
- Learn some philosophy and principles behind the Negeri Sembilan traditional architecture. The main buildings introduced were the old palace of Seri Menanti and a traditional Rumah Gadang (yet still under construction).
- Briefly joined the event known as "Olek Godang" which is a traditional Negeri Sembilan cultural festival.
Location visited
edit- Perkampungan Raja Teromba, Juasseh, Negeri Sembilan (meetup and starting point. It is a gallery about Datuk Rosli who is also known as "Raja Teromba".)
- Rumah Gadang, Kampung Seri Pilah, Negeri Sembilan
- Muzium Diraja Istana Lama Seri Menanti (consist of the reconstructed and relocated house of the palace chief builder known as Tukang Kahar, and also the old palace of Seri Menanti but still under maintenance)
- Panca Persada, located nearby the old palace of Seri Menanti (customary place for Yang di-Pertuan Besar installation event)
- Marrybrown Pekan Paroi (last gathering point for the Wikipedians involved)
Plans after event
edit- Participate more Malaysian traditional cultural events and learn more about the unique cultural heritage in Malaysia.
- Transcribe the teromba poem made by Datuk Rosli on Malay (and possibly English) Wikibooks.
Feedback
edit- Although felt quite rushed, the organized event is very informative. Perhaps the Malaysian Wikimedia User Group could collaborate more with other local authorities or individuals regarding the cultural events.
- There should be a second meetup in Negeri Sembilan for this event, because there are many more places that are yet to be visited.
