The eagerly awaited debut of Wikimedia Australia's first digitization outreach kit has arrived, come and join us to see what we have created. The event is to introduce everyone to the equipment we will have available and to review planned workflows. We will have some materials for practical tests. We'd like to acknowledge the City of Canning staff for their help. The Riverton library has recently under gone a major refurbishment now a specialty digital studio which we will have for the afternoon.

While the library doesn't open until 14:00 the Aquaccino Café in the Riverton Leisureplex will be open, if you'd like to have a coffee and chat feel free to arrive there from 13:15.

Report

I would like to thank the City of Canning and Riverton Library staff for their support for yesterday, the facilities available were amazing the space was perfect for WikiClubWest. The afternoon started with the unveiling of newest outreach project, and giving the people community a chance to explore the capabilities of the Digitization Kit. After an unpacking and setting up everyone had the opportunity to use the equipment with the provided 35mm colour slides. Primarily the slides were taken by Gnangarra at the Barbagallo Raceway on the 8th March 1985 making them 34 years old, they were of a Australian Touring Car event there at the time, including many of the eras household names. The purpose of the day was to enable as many regular outreach participants to get an understanding of the equipment, it was also to discuss work flows, create templates and reporting processes for future activities. There is a commons category tree to collate the files created at Commons:Category:WikiClubWest digitization.

This is the start of a new approach to outreach moving beyond the workshop model which regardless of location have experienced low retention and reuse across the global GLAM communities. We envisage that by becoming a service provider of our skills and equipment we can improve the long term collaborative activities. The digitization Kit comprises an Epson V850 pro scanner, a set of adjustable temperature led lights, a light tent for smaller objects, with our photographers using cameras and lens they were assisted in buying through Wikimedia Australias Camera Equipment Program.

Our photographers will be able to take high resolution photographs of objects as well as using macro lenses to photograph hallmarks and other similar identifying features all of which will improve the depth of knowledge available to the WMF projects. This process also has benefits to the collaborating partner in improving and documenting their own information about their collections, we all gain. As the west improves on its process and skills Wikimedia Australia will be able look at placing similar kits with other highly active local communities. Importantly we'll be able to share our experiences, practices, and knowledge with the ESEAP and wider Wikimedia communities. (written by VP of WMAU)
