OK lets get rolling. I like the idea of having a whole symphony orchestra for our Wiknic. If someone disagrees with the choice its a wiki! This has the potential of getting the most awesome Wiknic so far. Lets make it happen. Maybe that is fancy enough that even some people from the Ivory Tower in New Montgomery Street will join us. Does anyone know how quickly this fills up i.e. at what time one has to be there to get a good spot. I could facilitate a Carpool from the Eastbay.--Saehrimnir (talk) 03:16, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An average of 15,000 people show up at these free concerts at Stern Grove. That's not a picnic, that's a music festival. Blackguard 08:34, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I second Blackguard's comment. In my experience, Stern Grove concerts are a madhouse. How could WP folk even find each other? I love music, but it is going to shut down conversation among participants. --Mark viking (talk) 16:26, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK very valid points. I did not know that it was that much people when I was there 2 years ago it seem more like maybe 2000 and it had the feeling of a picnic with concert afterwards. My reasoning was that at the point when we would start it would not be so crowded already so that someone could still find each other. Also thats why I suggested having a Wikipedia sign so that people can find us (works quiet well for other meetups I attended). Many people also have Cellphones and some even smartphones, which could use the GPS Coordinates I would post once settled down. The most valid point is that the Music will shut down conversations. If we want to have conversations the whole duration of the thing then we should not do that. if we think that having a break in the conversations of 90 min in then we are fine. I have absolutely no problem with someone else taking over. I definitely don't want my attempt on pushing this forward lower the attendance I want this to be a good time for as many fellow Wikimedians as possible. One solution would be having the picnic in the western part of Stern grove. So people could go over to see the Concert if they want to.--Saehrimnir (talk) 17:57, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone can be contacted ? I am new to this place -- naveenpf (talk) 18:57, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the above, looking at this pictures of the festival [2] -- Stern grove on a concert day (on a holiday weekend) seems way too crowded. User:Naveenpf, what do you want to know? -- phoebe / (talk to me) 21:09, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Which is nearest bart station ? -- naveenpf (talk) 03:35, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
naveenpf, we decided above to meet at the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. You will need to take a bus from Bart to the park. My suggestion would be taking the 21 bus from Powell St. Bart towards Golden Gate Park (it's approximately a 20 minute ride). Feel free to send me an email! Thanks, Stephen (talk) 15:25, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Planning Phase

Location suggestions?

edit
  1. Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA
  2. Crissy Field, San Francisco, CA
    1. a little hard to get to; parking is impossible. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 16:53, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Yerba Buena Island, San Francisco, CA (between bay bridge and Treasure Island)
    1. Not very accessible by public transport, but perhaps a goofy / good idea because of its uniqueness. Also, the article could be improved! Mattsenate (talk) 19:07, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    2. Maybe keep this idea for next year (or the one after ;-( ) when you can actually bike there from the Oakland side which gives another option.
    3. I love Yerba Buena Island -- seems like a great choice. Let's do it next year so we can have a little more time to plan carpools. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 16:52, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Yerba Buena Gardens (Are there restrictions might prevent that?)
    1. easy and fun
  5. In Front of San Francisco City Hall (Are there restrictions might prevent that?)Lawns
    1. This is s
  6. Conservatory of Flowers
    1. This gets my  Y -- it's a pleasant place to sit and talk, and easy to find in the park. Stephen (talk) 07:56, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    2. never been but seems fine with me :) -- phoebe / (talk to me) 16:52, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Alamo Square
    1. as an out-of-towner I find it difficult to get to Alamo Sq (maybe not more difficult than other places, but still difficult for parking/muni/etc.). OTOH it does have really nice views :) I'd be happy with this. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 16:52, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  8. Stern Grove, S.F. Easily accessible by Muni. The San Francisco Symphony is playing there for free that day. [3]
    1. The East Meadow there usually has no one using it and there is a fire pit there. Hgrosser (talk) 00:52, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I like 4, 5, 1 because they are not so far from BART.--Saehrimnir (talk) 18:20, 22 June 2014 (UTC)Update: I like Alamo Square to.[reply]

Alamo Square is good, but I think San Francisco City Hall may not be a great atmosphere to host a picnic. I think I would be happy at any of the locations. Stephen (talk) 08:03, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I also like 4, Yerba Buena Gardens. It is easily accessible by MUNI/BART/Caltrain/other Public Transportation and it is in a warm, usually sunny location, and my check of their website http://yerbabuenagardens.com/events/ showed no events occurring there on July 6, 2014. [User:mblanos] (talk)
  • I like Stern Grove - fun place to hang out and having some music would make it all the better! Merrilee (talk) 00:29, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Interested?

  • Thanks for noticing that. I got it changed. As the event is only starting at 2, I'm sure things will still be in full swing for a while after 4, so please still come. Julia\talk 00:27, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
