In the Rialto you have rated me

Many a time and oft
In the Rialto you have rated me
About my monies, and my usuances:
Still have I borne it with a patient shrug,
For sufferance is the badge of all our tribe.

— William Shakespeare (1564–1616), The Merchant of Venice, Shylock, Act I, Scene III (1623)

I know that in its context the phrase takes on another meaning (very negative, I would say), , but taken alone it seems to be good. Isn't? –pjoef (talkcontribs) 12:03, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

A reference to one of the mythological twin eggs of Leda and Zeus and also the title of a 1917 painting by Paul Klee (1879–1940). Ab ovo derives from:
1. nec gemino bellum Troianum orditur ab ouo ("do not begin the Trojan War from the double egg") by Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65 BC–8 BC) in his Ars Poetica (ca. 18 BC);
2. ab ovo usque ad mala ("from the egg to the apples") again by Horace in his Satires, Satire 1.3: Omnibus hoc vitium est ("Everyone has this flaw") (ca. 35–33 BC), which refers to the order of dishes at a Roman banquet [from the beginning (eggs) to the end (apples or, more in general, fruit)].

Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War!

Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind. He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel ... And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man" — with his mouth. —Mark Twain

Half wishing they were dead to save the shame.

They have drawn too near the fire of life, like gnats,

    • First of all, I would like to thank you, Mr. Stradivarius, for taking the time to "look" at MotD because we are in need again. The last approved motto is scheduled for the 27th of November, and I was/am going to approve nominations without enough discussion... and you know that it ain't no good.
      About this nomination: this is an old principle of justice. There is a longer and more complete version made by Cicero: "Iustitia suum cuique distribuit." ("Justice renders to everyone his due.") from his philosophical dialogue De Natura Deorum ("On the Nature of the Gods"; 45 BC), a book that was called by Voltaire as the best book of all antiquity. "Philosophy" apart, I used WP:RGW because sometimes the opposites converge, which is another philosophical, but also in mathematics, theory, but I do not know if this is the case or not. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 09:12, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
