Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Macedonia)/Sources
Due to the Prespa agreement, the Republic of Macedonia has been renamed to the Republic of North Macedonia. While there is no contention about the new country's name, there has been some uncertainty about the terminology used for the nationality, as well as about the various adjectival usage of 'Macedonian' or 'North Macedonian', respectively, which could potentially result in a continuation of the Macedonia naming dispute.
In light of these events, editors on Wikipedia conducted a new RFC to adopt a new set of naming conventions and amend the ones in place since 2009. The RfC was held between February and March 2019 and was ultimately closed by BD2412, QEDK, and Neutrality. A new version the Macedonia naming convention was adopted in May 2019.
This is a temporary WikiProject for the purpose of establishing how common each of the respective terminology is used in reliable sources. The end goal of this page is to aid and to ensure the verifiability and the neutrality of the community-based decision making in relation to the naming conventions used for Macedonia. The page will close or freeze once it is absolutely clear which terminology has become WP:COMMONNAME.
Methodology
editThe structure of the project roughly follows provisions set by the Prespa agreement.
Only include links published after February 12, 2019. This is in compliance with the name changes policy which instructs us to give extra weight to reliable sources written after the name change is announced.
Please only use reliable sources. A list of frequently-used sources and their reliability status can be found here. Green-labeled perennial sources should be included in the 'Major media' subsections. The inclusion of other media reports in the 'Major media' subsections should be discussed on the talk page.
Don't include multiple reproductions on various media from the same news agency report - this is essentially the same source.
Please don't include sources based in North Macedonia or Greece or their respective diaspora communities.
Sources often edit/update their initial reports. If you spot inconsistencies, please edit accordingly.
For changes in the methodology, structure, the inclusion or exclusion of certain sources or other modifications please use the talk page.
Term used for people
editNote: The usage of "Macedonian(s)" for the majority ethnic group in North Macedonia is considered non-contentious. For that reason all references to "Macedonian(s)" where the term is clearly and unmistakably used in an ethnic sense (ex. The city X in North Macedonia is populated mostly by (ethnic) Macedonians
) are not included in the research.
