Christmas Carol

DOS

• A lot of popular DOS games (like the current windows ones) are illegally copied and not necessarily sold. I think the Commander Keen series makes a good chance as does the original Doom. - Mgm|^(talk) 07:58, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

I asked about the restriction because many games - well into the Windows 98 days - were DOS. In order to run them, you had to restart your computer in DOS mode. Quake and Tomb Raider are two that I remember. It was possible to get them to function in a DOS window in Windows, but it wasn't optimal. I'm sure there were many more. If the question is limiting itself to games before Windows 3 became popular, then this is a completely different question. -- kainaw™ 14:29, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Well, I would think that any game that ran on the MS-DOS platform would count. Clearly, Doom is a DOS game, even though it came out three years after Windows 3. And honestly, I don't think there are any real competitors to Doom, it's easily one of the most sold games of all time, and since Myst didn't come out on DOS (and The Sims was much later), that has to be the one. According to List of best-selling video games#PC, Populous sold 4 million, though it looks like that was spread over many platforms. The DOS version was a significant chunk of that no doubt. Doom is not easily one of the most sold games of all time. Id made sure everyone knew that Quake outsold Doom. As I mentioned before, Quake was designed to run without Windows - just DOS. There was a port called WinQuake that allowed you to run it reasonably well in Windows - but you had to purchase the DOS version of Quake to run WinQuake. -- kainaw™ 21:46, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

I have Carmageddon and when i complete the car crusher mission There comes up an rear end of car dragging television. What car does it resemble.

IIRC he said it was on the playstation last time, not going to work on his PC. I haven't played Carmageddon in years - have just dug it out and am contemplating installing it (and found a demo disc from PCZone August 1997 in the box... How short a season would Major League Baseball be willing to have?

With the NFL strike, there was a 9-game season in 1982; the NBA and NHL have each seasons of about 50 games. Baseball has never had to deal with a really shortenned season, but have they talked about it? Say, for instance, the 1981-strike-shortned season had seen the strike last till September. Or, the 1994 season had begun with a strike.lockout? (Presumably with owners trying to sign replacement players to play that shortened season, as they tried to start 1995)

My guess is that they might be willing to go for less than half - two months' worth would be really short, but they accepted 50-60 games as half a season where the winners made the playoffs.Somebody or his brother (talk) 23:03, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

I guess that makes sense since the players and owners couldn't agree there and they just scrapped things, if they had had a strike or lockout at the beginning of some season and it went till July, a 60-game season is possible after a couple weeks of spring training (well, summer training). (As I said, perhaps with owners threatening to start on July 1 with replacements before an agreement was reached. It would be kind of easy, if you just accepted 2-game series home and away for 4 games each against the other teams, in 1994 that would be 52 games, if you had a season start in August.)

The thing about baseball is that the 162-game season is outrageously long. The NFL does fine with a 16 game season; even College Basketball generally gets by with a 30 game regular season. The relatively mild pace of an individual baseball game makes the 162-game season reasonable (that players won't break down, etc. etc.); however one could easily determine a league champion for each league with only a 30 game season or so (which would give you an intra-league home-and-away double-round-robin between all teams). In this manner, Baseball is better positioned to manage a short season than other sports. It also why football, with its 16-game schedule, was forced to use scabs in 1987 while no other sport has; one NFL game is equivalent to TWO WEEKS of games in baseball... --Jayron32.talk.contribs 21:25, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
