- Your merely raising this question tells us more about you than most anyone here would want to know. Did you try contacting them? Because only they will know for sure. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 17:29, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, this is the sort of rubbish that ought to get this guy warned or worse. He was discussed over on the ref desk talk page but no action was taken, unsurprisingly. --Viennese Waltz 19:12, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Rafael Trujillo's cameo in Casablanca
editThe IMDb article about Rafael Trujillo says:
- Trivia: Had a small part in Casablanca (1942). He can be seen in the background of the famous airport tarmac scene starting a silver airplane's propeller towards the right of the screen. The documentary that was released in conjunction with the film's DVD release discusses this little-known fact.
Since Trujillo started his third term as President of the Dominican Republic in 1942, I find it dubious. The WP articles about him or the film don't mention the cameo, but Casablanca, l’aventure du film has page 197 about him, although the page is not available at Google Books. Can you tell me if it really happened? --Error (talk) 19:04, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
- FWIW IMDb does a so-so job of distinguishing different people with the same name. For example Kathleen Kim is an opera singer who performs all over the world. Her IMDb credits also list her as a producer and editor includes various other behind the camera jobs. This means there are at least two people by that name but IMDb can't be bothered to do the research to separate them out. I don't know if that is the case for your question Error question about RT but I mention it since it is a possibility. MarnetteD|Talk 19:47, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
- I find it dubious too, particularly considering that scene was shot in the US. But, as stated above, the IMDB item does cite a source: "The documentary that was released in conjunction with the film's DVD release". I have no idea of how reliable that source is. --184.145.50.201 (talk) 20:32, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
- It's rubbish. Starting a propeller is dangerous and would surely only have been done by trained personnel at the airfield. And since the guy was born "into a lower-middle-class family" I can't see him doing that sort of work.--Shantavira|feed me 08:50, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
- I disagree with your last general point, although I too find it hard to believe that it's really Trujillo. In both the early days of aviation and later, a good many pilots learned to fly as a rich or well-off man's hobby, or as officer cadets of some kind. Trujillo might have done so in the Dominican National Guard. I notice, however, that IMDb claims he joined the Guard "as a teenager" and "in 1918", in which year he was actually 26–7. It would be nice if someone with the appropriate CD issue were to watch the documentary and report back.
- [Edited to add] Incidentally, the film's article states "The background of the final scene, which shows a Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior airplane with personnel walking around it, was staged using little person extras and a proportionate cardboard plane. Fog was used to mask the model's unconvincing appearance." Is this not the "famous airport tarmac scene" in question? {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.197.27.217 (talk) 09:14, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

- Is it not possible that the person was a Rafael Trujillo, but not the Rafael Trujillo, and someone has made an incorrect assumption? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 18:54, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
- Not only is it possible, I also think this is the most likely explanation. Such mix-ups are fairly common. In my editing career here I have removed more than a few spurious links, where the name of some NN bruce or sheila was linked to an article on a famous namesake. --Lambiam 08:12, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- On another hand, IMDb once had three listings for Jack Vance (aka John Holbrook Vance). —Tamfang (talk) 01:00, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
