Anyone recognize this movie?

I'm thinking of a black-and-white movie, probably from the 1940s or 1950s, which I've seen on TV but don't remember very well. The primary setting is a mansion on a large country estate in the US, probably New England. I think someone is visiting the estate not realizing that the owner is a villain. The estate is surrounded by a fence and at one point someone has to get through this fence without being seen by guards. I also recall that the road to reach the mansion goes over a small bridge which collapses at some point, probably intentionally. Finally, the estate also has a guest house or some such building, which at the end of the movie is destroyed by fire. I thought the villain might have been a Nazi (postwar) and might have been played by George Sanders, but I haven't found anything that matches. That "possible" way requires opening over 600 Wikipedia pages to look for one that fits, and it only works if I was right about New England. That's a good guess, but no. Earlier I said I thought the villain might be an ex-Nazi; I'm pretty sure that he wanted power over masses of people somehow, rather than the crime being a personal one as in Rebecca. --174.95.81.219 (talk) 06:36, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Ah, a supervillain. Gregory Gaye Helmut Dantine played quite a few Nazis, possibly some exes, with big plans for decent society. Might narrow the hunt down a bit. InedibleHulk (talk) 08:20, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Sadly, no. The other thing I know about this movie is that I had it mixed up in my mind with The Stranger, which in fact I only saw for the first time quite recently. Hmm. How synchronistic. I saw The Stranger on TV about 60 years ago, but all I ever remembered of it was the ending. Then I came across a DVD in a shop last week, and watched it just 3 days ago. You can sign your posts by typing four tildes (like ~~~~); see Wikipedia:Signatures. Above your draft article there is now a huge grey box that starts with Draft article not currently submitted for review.
