First punk rock record

Which was the first punk rock record? Was it the Sex Pitols' "Anarchy in the U.K."? Thanks 86.157.60.8 (talk) 19:49, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Depends a bit on the definition of "punk rock", but New Rose by The Damned was the first of a British punk band. --Wrongfilter (talk) 19:54, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Anarchy in the UK (1977) was a year after punk rock hit mainstream. Most people consider 1976 the year that punk rock hit mainstream with multiple releases: The Ramones, The Damned, and the Saints all releasing punk rock albums. Obviously, they were playing their music before they released their albums. But, as with any music genre, punk formed over time. So, various bands had what we would now call "punk rock" songs on their albums long before 1976. Also, it is personal opinion. I personally consider Neu!75 to be punk rock, but it isn't classified as such by others. Some call it proto-punk, bridging between psychadelic rock of the early 70s and punk rock of the late 70s. I also feel that the "experiments" (less song, more experimental sound layering) by Yoko Ono have a strong feel of punk rock long before anyone thought about punk rock. I do not believe there is a coincidence that punk became very popular in New York about the time that she was over that sound and moving on to the next thing. 97.82.165.112 (talk) 13:45, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

Yes, I agree, impossible to answer. Dr. Feelgood recorded "She Does It Right" as early as 1974, but it's generally regarded as Proto-punk. Sounds a bit like R&B to me. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:54, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

It was certainly not the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the U.K.", as has already been explained - there were many UK bands who pre-dated them, and even more in the U.S.. It's pretty easy to find examples of punk rock attitudes back in the 1960s, even the 1950s, though they were not known by that name then. Try this (1965) or this (1967). That's rather an odd article - it's a huge list of songs and artists with one single reference (supporting one single entry) and one fanzine in "Further reading"?
