Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Schools

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Schools. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Schools|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Schools. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.

For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

I did a search and this seems not to be notable Chidgk1 (talk) 19:07, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Procedural keep: While I acknowledge that high school articles are not automatically notable, there is a community consensus that a good faith WP:BEFORE that includes some print resources or local newspapers is needed, per this RfC. This is especially important given the underrepresentation of high schools from the non-English-speaking parts of the world on the English Wikipedia. • Comment: Found [6][7][8]. Probably not enough to meet GNG. Most coverage of schools is from when they were built and thus likely offline. C F A 💬 18:43, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: I would say almost all Anatolian High Schools established in the early 90s or before and required entrance exams are very likely to be notable, especially in metropolitan cities like Ankara. They were extremely hard to get in via the nationwide admission tests. Many sources covering them would be offline, unfortunately. This particular school seems also notable because it was the first such school founded by the National Lottery Administration. TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 19:16, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out the name of the school has changed in 2012, following 2011 Van Earthquakes. The new name is Betül Can Anadolu Lisesi. One needs to be in the top 3.75% of the participants in order to be placed into this school. I am pretty sure this was much tougher in the pre-1997 era, when there were fewer Anatolian High Schools and the placement was done after 5th grade, so they did not have to compete with Science High Schools. This itself does not bring notability, I know, but it significantly increases the likelihood of coverage in reliable sources. E.g., here is a news story about a success of their students. TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 01:47, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The new name may lead to sources that show notability, but qualitative statements about the school, even if sourced, really have nothing to do with notability in the way the term is used on Wikipedia 4.37.252.50 (talk) 03:58, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The cited sources are two press releases (Sylheter Dak and Daily Jalalabad), a list of the ~60 schools operated by the army, a job posting, and the school website. Searches in English and Bengali found a few primary source breaking news stories, generally of the form "so-and-so, a student at Jalalabad Cantonment English School and College",[9] but no independent, secondary sources containing significant coverage of the school itself. Therefore does not meet WP:NSCHOOL and should not be a stand alone article. Worldbruce (talk) 06:40, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Other than some passing mentions, there is no coverage about this primary school. There are million schools like this in Bangladesh, we don’t create article just because it exists. The school fails to meet WP:NSCHOOL, WP:GNG. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 08:35, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also, your argument for why it should be deleted has several problems, You said "There are milion schools like this in Bangladesh'', This is factually incorrect because there are about 5 to 8 times less schools in Bangladesh than you said, Even though the report is 3 years old, not many instituitions have been created in just 3 years. And also, It would be grammatically correct, if you said ''there are millions of schools like this one in Bangladesh,'' I think you forgot to add s to article. I also have spelling problems and also problems in grammar, The spelling and issues in grammar are not really the problem, Contradictions are the problem. BangladeshiEditorInSylhet (talk) 09:22, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In that case, Most pages in fact, 50% of all pages about schools need to be deleted then, There are several sources talking about the instituition and about it. There are not just passing mentions, Not every instituition will get significant coverage, Yes, just because a school exists does not always mean, It should get it's own page. That is correct. However some schools get attention from Independent and Non-Independent Newspapers, News Portals and Websites, Those are the ones that I am creating now, I might have made mistakes in the past, However I now kind of understand. And, in my opinion, this system sucks, If a page gets deleted, and then the topic gets high attention and coverage from many sources, It will still be deleted because It has some similiarity of the page when It was previously deleted. There are not milions of schools in Bangladesh, That is factually incorrect, You are just saying factually incorrect stuff and try to make sense, Just because you have a high edit count, and there is less sources of a instituition than others does not mean It will be deleted, Instead of constantly nominating pages for deletion, It is better to find sources, Improving the page and if unable to find any, then it makes sense to nominate it for deletion. I will try to find sources about the instituition. BangladeshiEditorInSylhet (talk)

Please see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. Please provide significant coverage from reliable sources (see WP:SIGCOV) rather than adding 17 passing mentions. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 10:39, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There are 7 references in the article. Reference 6 is written by a teacher of that school (WP:PRIMARY), and the remaining references are either passing mentions or directory listings. --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 14:57, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

One of about 35 secondary schools in the city. Translated from the Bengali Wikipedia. All the content comes from the school's website. The other source cited, barisallive24.com (now dead), is obscure and of unknown reliability but probably partly supported the last sentence of the article. That sentence has lost something in translation. In its history the school has received two awards for excellence. Not, judging by the barisallive24.com title, for being the top school in the country, but for their results within Barisal District.

Searches in English and Bengali found a few primary source breaking news stories, but no significant coverage of the school itself.[10][11][12] Nothing more has been written about the 2013 allegation or the 2017 and 2020 complaints about fees. Without multiple secondary sources containing significant coverage, does not meet WP:NSCHOOL. Open to redirection to List of educational institutions in Barisal District, where the school is listed. • Comments - First, there are several websites with text almost identical to this article, but I can't tell whether the WP article is WP:COPYVIO or a case of citogenesis: (1), (2), (3).
The article needs to be revised to resolve the possible copyvio problem.
Second, there are sources that could be used in an overhaul effort for this article:
Third, there are multiple listings by college, annually, naming scholarship awardees at the various institutions, with descriptions of the award, which colud provide in depth, reliable sources to revise the article.
Last, perhaps the best solution to the problem of potential copyvio might be to draftify this article, and rebuild it from secondary, reliable sources. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 17:53, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A copyvio is unlikely. Looking through the article's history, the current version developed slowly over time. Here is the copyvio comparison for your link no. 1. It's blatantly obvious (and also kinda funny) that they just copied text from Wikipedia and made some minor changes to disguise it ("29" -> "various", "selected" -> "chosen", "on the basis of" -> "based on"). The comparison tool doesn't work for the other two links, but they're dated so we can look at the latest revision before they were published. For both no. 2 and no. 3, the text was already there. So the copyright concerns are baseless and the article should definitely not be draftified. --Un assiolo (talk) 19:19, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge to Thomas Siebel or Improve. There are pages about the scholars at the websites of colleges and universities, and contrary to comments above I do consider these as RS. There is a burden on universities to be honest, so if something is published then they consider it at least slightly notable. That so many have relevant press releases says a lot. I will oppose a redirect as the section Thomas Siebel#Philanthropy does not cover this largish program. Improve is my preference, I think the editor missed what is needed for notability, and maybe nobody helped. Ldm1954 (talk) 14:49, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The press releases and official publications of universities of scholarship awardees cannot be considered "independent". Dclemens1971 (talk) 19:14, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly disagree with that statement. If universities publish misinformation on their webpages there are serious consequences. Hence what they publish is much, much more rigorously curated than many newspapers. Ldm1954 (talk) 20:20, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is reliable. But it is not independent. The question is not whether what they write is true, it is why they publish it. However a books search shows mention of Siebel Scholars in multiple books. Some are primary sources, yet the mention of Siebel Scholars in, e.g., [15]: 132  amounts to secondary information in a primary source. Some are just passing [16] and some are not independent [17] but I think it would be worth looking at those a little more closely. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 21:07, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Finally, click on the ProQuest ID link in each citation.) The article's sections, "Participating Schools", and the "Conference Topics & Speakers" are still completely un-referenced, and should probably be deleted or references provided. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 03:13, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - Grand'mere Eugene makes a strong WP:HEY case, having expanded the page from a good number of newspaper sources. There is a question sometimes about the extent that a newspaper article is a primary source, if it merely reports in a local paper that a student has received the award, but the coverage goes beyond this. In addition there are book sources. I state above [18]: 132  is a primary source, but the section about the Siebel Scholars is secondary information in that primary source. The Meth project link also gets discussed in [19]: 158, 286  although that is not in depth. This one [20]: 283  talks about an extension of the prgram into biomedical engineering. There are many that reference funding. My reading is still not exhaustive of these, but I think that this has sufficient penetration and sufficient sourcing to cross the bar. Thanks, also, to Grand'mere Eugene for improving the article. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 07:46, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per WP:HEY (previous !vote struck above); article still needs cleanup but sources found and added bring it over the bar. Dclemens1971 (talk) 15:03, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lacks significance. It's just an admission portal. The article doesn't appear to be significant enough. Thewikizoomer (talk) 10:30, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete: It lacks notability, no major significance of the subject, Common App is very popular and one of the only ways to apply in the US, this portal doesn't have that notability. Xoocit (talk) 23:09, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep: The West Bengal Centralised Admission Portal is a crucial government initiative that facilitates admissions to over 460 government and government-aided colleges in the state, serving more than 5.2 lakh students annually. The portal's impact has been widely covered by reliable newspapers like The Telegraph India and others, further establishing its importance in West Bengal's education system. While not globally known like the Common App, it plays a transformative role regionally, making it notable enough for inclusion on Wikipedia.

Delete It might serve a specialized purpose, but is not notable. Many countries have specialized national admission arrangements. ~~
