The guideline on Nigerian news sources, WP:NEWSORGNIGERIA, does not give editors the right to categorically dismiss any and all sources from Nigeria. It cautions editors that some Nigerian journalists are known to give news coverage, or provide more favourable coverage, to individuals and organisations in exchange for payment
. This applies to whole publications and articles written for otherwise reputable and reliable news sources.
Editors should examine every article and source on a case-by-case basis, eliminating articles and sources that contain promotional writing.
Some hallmarks of promotional and paid-for writing include:
- The same or very similar text can be found across several different sources (not syndicated, but copied).
- The article overly praises the subject (glazing).
- The article is not signed by an author.
- The article's author has written other similar articles.
- The publication/website contains many articles that glaze the subject.
- The article is not written in journalistic style, but seems more like a social media post.
- The article is very short and contains very little factual information.
- The article is not within the publication's usual reporting.
