Guidelines
edit- The picture must already be a featured picture. To nominate a picture for that honor see featured picture candidates.
- Featured images are currently selected in roughly the order in which they were promoted (i.e. a First In, First Out order). See the featured pictures candidates archive for this order. Exceptions are made for anniversaries of events, or for national holidays.
- Not all featured pictures will appear as POTD. Wikipedia:Picture of the day/Unused has a list of those that have been skipped.
Including the POTD on your user page
editYou can insert the image on your user page or talk page by adding the text {{Pic of the day}}
(this version is shown above). It will be displayed in a box of no more than 600 pixels wide, and will include a small amount of text based on the article in which the image appears. A no-text version is also available via {{POTD}}
.
It is also possible to create your own custom POTD layouts, in case the already-existing versions will not look good within your user page design. Mix and match the following components to make your own. Be sure to replace [date]
with an appropriate date value. For a dynamically updating version, use {{#time:Y-m-d}}
(example: {{POTD/{{#time:Y-m-d}}|image}}
).
- number= - number of sounds
- filename=Pinafore airs 1.ogg
- title="Pinafore airs", pt. 1

- filename2=
- title2=
- description2=

- caption=The main text describing the sound
- credit=If not in the caption.

The image caption. | The red-lored whistler (Pachycephala rufogularis) is one of nine species of whistler occurring in Australia and a member of the family Pachycephalidae. It resides in the low mallee, spinifex, cypress pine and broombush woodland in the desert of central New South Wales, north-western Victoria and adjacent south-eastern South Australia, preferring low mallee woodlands or shrublands with open canopy, above a moderately dense but patchy scrub layer. The male bird has an orange or buff face and throat, a grey breastband extending around the neck and over the head, and rufous underparts with pale yellow or olive edging to primaries. The female is similar but with a paler throat and underparts. While it is often seen perched in trees and shrubs, the red-lored whistler feeds, for the most part, on the ground. Little is known about the movement of this species, although it is thought to be sedentary, with some movement possibly after breeding. It builds a substantial, cup-shaped nest made mostly of coarse bark and mallee leaves, neatly woven around the rim in low shrubs and lays two or three eggs. The species's limited range has seen it listed nationally as a vulnerable species. This red-lored whistler was photographed in the Nombinnie Nature Reserve in New South Wales. |

There are two additional pre-defined layouts
{{SOTD/{{#time:Y-m-d}}|column}}
: This has the image and caption above each other with no borders. Used on some of the Main Page alternatives and suitable for user pages as well.{{SOTD/{{#time:Y-m-d}}|row}}
: This has the image and caption encapsulated in (usually) a single table row. This is the version used on the Main Page.
It is also possible to permanently feature a POTD for a selected day. Just add a specific value for the date you want. For example, today's POTD is {{SOTD/2024-11-21|image}}
. Likewise, you can use date parameters with the other templates as well. If you like the pre-made formats, you can use date parameters there as well, like this: {{Sound of the day|date=2024-11-21}}
or {{SOTD|date=2024-11-21}}
. Again, this system will only work for Pictures of the day selected beginning January 1, 2007.

POTD thumb
editWhen you want to display the POTD like an ordinary thumbnail, similar to {{WP:Wikimedia Commons/POTD}}, you can use {{POTD wikipedia}}. For instance, if you want a thumbnailed version, floated right, you can use : {{Template:POTD wikipedia|float=right|title=yes|thumb=yes}}.
