Greetings Joel,

I'm glad that you'd like to use the image on wikipedia. I do have one condition. Is there any way I can get some photo credit? Perhaps a source link back to the original file?

www.flickr.com/photos/radargeek/2598112871/

Sincerely, Justin

I emailed Bliss to ask for permission to use the Bliss logo for the Bliss TV article in Wikipedia and here is the reply email. (I was also sent a copy of the logo for use in the article).

Hi Sean - thanks for your email

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you - I have been out of the office for the past week. I have no problem whatsoever with you using the Bliss logo for the Wikipedia article, hope you are enjoying the channel

Kind regards

matt

Here is the original message which I sent to Bliss.

Hello, I am e-mailing you to ask if I can have permission to use the Bliss logo for the Wikipedia article about Bliss TV. To see this article go to wikipedia and search for bliss tv channel.

If you will kindly allow me to use the logo to put in the article, can you send me one or is there a website from which I can get it. Or even better, can you please upload it to Wikipedia.

I only want the logo for the article as Bliss and B4 are the only Chart Show Channels without a logo in their articles. I will not use the logo for anything else.

Many thanks Sean.

This is the email I received from Anthony Venn-Brown granting me permission to post his photograph on wikipedia .

Hi Kerrie

Here is my promo pic that you can use on Wikipedia. I believe that they will require permission from me to use that. I’m more than happy for you to use this pic as it appears on my website and also has been used with various media articles

This is the email I recieved from Aaron Harber granting me permission to post his bio and images on wikipedia.

Dear John,

Thank you for your request to publish or otherwise post the narrative biography you discussed with us.

You may use this letter as confirmation you have been granted permission for such use.

Thank you for writing. I very much appreciate Wikipedia's fastidiousness regarding copyright law.

Car photos from Garage De l'Est

edit

A large amount of mainly classic car photos can be found here: [2]

A request made to the owner of the website, asking if the photos from this page could be used in wikipedia articles in multiple languages, possibly requiring some photos to be edited, resulted in the following positive response from Hans Stedehouder from Garage De l'Est. The original Dutch response:

Goede avond. Ga gerust uw gang. Onze website is mede bedoeld om autoliefhebbers te laten 'meegenieten' van al dat moois. Veel succes.

Translation in English: Good evening. Go right ahead. Our website is partially aimed at letting other car enthusiasts enjoy all this beauty. Best of luck.

Further, he has agreed to the use of the Creative Commons 2.5 license ([3]) for these photos.

The Coming Technological Singularity

edit

This article was deleted from WikiSource because it was originally distributed under a non-GFDL compatible license which expressly forbade commercial use.

I contacted the author, Vernor Vinge, regarding changing the license on this document to one which is hopefully compatible with the GFDL. He changed it to the following:

Verbatim copying/translation and distribution of this
entire article is permitted in any medium, provided this
 notice is preserved.

The author CC'd permissions@wikimedia.org in the e-mail in which he informed me of this change, as well as changed the license in the official copy he maintains (linked in the e-mail he sent)

The president and CEO of the Vepachedu Educational Foundation is named Sreenivasarao Vepachedu, PhD, JD, LLM. I e-mailed him, asking for permission to use text from The Vepachedu Foundation on Wikipedia. Earlier this year I wrote to Phil Allen, co-discoverer of the crater, with an e-mail based on Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission#Informal (images), asking for his permission to release Image:Silverpit crater seismic map.jpg under the GFDL. He gave his permission, and very kindly also provided Image:Silverpit northwest perspective.jpg to be released under the GFDL, and made some helpful suggestions regarding the article's content as well. In My Garden

I asked Susan Sweeney (the copyright owner) if we could use the photos on In My Garden on Wikipedia. She said we could use all we want, so long as we don't give permission for anyone else to use them. I explained to her that we couldn't use the photos unless they were licensed under the GFDL, and I explained to her what that meant. She said "GFDL is not quite what I want but I want to support Wikipedia, so I'll live with it." There are lots of great images here. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 13:58, August 3, 2005 (UTC)

Sonia Lee Kahn, Philippe Kahn & Fullpower

edit

I requested permission to create a bio on Sonia Lee Kahn, Philippe Kahn & Fullpower, his 4th successful company. The Kahn's are innovation & business icon's throughout the central coast, ca communities and in the wireless industry around the world. Prior to interviewing with the company I found research vague and somewhat inaccurate. I only knew that because of confirmation of facts with employees of their former company. Once hired I requested permission from both Philippe and Sonia to be able to create Wiki articles on both of them and the company. They agreed and authorized the content as accurate. I will post their email confirmations and a contact email for verification purposes. Athena  :) 19:16, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 4:36 Hi there, I have had increasing difficulty this last month trying to get the Wikipedia articles posted and kept on Wikipedia the way I created it. It has been a constant battle. They keep getting tagged as either copyright violation or that they are not from a ‘neutral point of view’.

I sent each of you an email requesting your permission to copy the info as I had it. I have to post your permission to keep this from happening, or hopefully keep this from happening. Please respond to the request and I will try to re-post the articles as you approved.

Thank you,

Permission from Marley Company

edit

I found a small photograph of an industrial wet cooling tower on the website of the Marley Company (who engineer, design and construct such cooling towers) at http://www.marleyct.com/wet/. I wanted to use that photo in Cooling towers and so I wrote the webmaster and asked for permission to do so. He sent me an email and granted me permission.

I then sent him another email, using information from Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission, and asked him to grant me permission under the terms of a GNU Free Documentation License (often referred to as the GNU-FDL, or GFDL) and explained to him, in detail, what that meant. I also told him where he could read the complete text of the GFDL. I then asked him to review it with his management and have someone in his management grant me permission under GFDL. I have just received such permission from Don Lillig, the Manager of Marketing Communications and Design, SPX Cooling Technologies (who are the parent company owning the Marley brand cooling towers). I will email a copy of all the foregoing emails to permissions at wikimedia dot org. - mbeychok 23:46, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Permission from Lubos Bena / World Resophonic Association

I sent an email to Lubos Bena, President of the World Resophonic Association, based on Wikipedia:Boilerplate_request_for_permission#Informal (images), asking for permission to use two images from his personal website depicting two varieties of slide guitar technique (Image:Fingandslide.jpg and Image:Lapstyle.jpg). He responded very quickly and rather kindly gave permission to use any images and info from http://www.lubosbena.sk/ and info from http://www.resophonic-association.com/.

Since the boilerplate request explains the GFDL and the reply didn't specify any particular terms, I'm using the GFDL tag.

CUA & The K of C

edit

I recieved permission from Dr. Edward M. Sullivan, PSD, to use the relevant portions of the history he wrote of the DC Knights of Columbus for the article CUA & The K of C. The relevant portions of the e-mail granting permission are below, and the whole text was sent to permissions@wikimedia.org.

Brian:

Sorry for the delay in getting the attached to you. They are: (1) the complete chronological history (HISTORY.RTF), and (2) the abstracted sections dealing with CUA, plus sections that might be of interest to the CUA Council, that I pulled out several years ago (CUAHIST.RTF), . This should provide some grist for your project. The first document provides some context for the second, but the second contains nothing not in the first. The longer document makes it possible to do key word searches for other items of interest. ...

Happy Easter to you and yours!

This wasn't exactly a request for permission, more a clarification that a person who already granted permission was in a position to do so. commons:User:Radustefanescugross uploaded numerous images of George Ştefănescu's paintings (on Commons) and marked them with [[:commons:template:Bild-CC-by-sa/2.0/de]]. I corresponded with him to verify how he was in the position to grant that license. The answer is that he is Ştefănescu's son, and he is exactly the person who handles permissions for exhibition catalogues, etc. So this should be OK: we are on exactly the same footing as an exhibition catalogue for an exhibition of Ştefănescu's work. - Jmabel | Talk 19:19, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You have mine and Bernard's release to use the image on Wikipedia. Thanks, Suz Andreasen www.suzandreasen.com <http://www.suzandreasen.com> suzandreasen@gmail.com

On 2/23/07, Archie Martin <archiesattic@earthlink.net> wrote: Dear Ms. Andreasen and Mr. Andreasen: I am one of the many volunteer editors of Wikipedia (wikipedia.org <http://wikipedia.org> ), a Web-based collaboration.

I respectfully request your permission to use your excellent Photograph of Tigerlily Suite as Wikipedia content. Wikipedia is a multilingual open-content encyclopedia that strives for complete and reliable content. Volunteers from around the world collaboratively create content, but Wikipedia depends upon art such as yours, to clearly illustrate that content.

It is to that noble end that I make this request. However, for Wikipedia to use your material, you must agree to the GNU Free Documentation License (often referred to as the GNU-FDL, or GFDL). In essence, the GFDL allows you to retain the copyright and authorship of your work, but grants permission for others to use, copy, and share your materials freely, and even potentially use them commercially, so long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, or try to prevent others from using or copying them freely (e.g., "share-alike"). You can read the complete license at " wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text <http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text> of the GFDL".

If you grant permission for use, we will credit you for your work, and state that it is used with your permission <<if applicable>, and provide a link back to your website.

I sincerely appreciate your consideration of this matter. Please advise your decision of this request email and I will gratefully forward it to the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thank you, and I hope you will consider accepting this request.

Sincerely, Archie Martin

Hmm. Rights to the picture, sure... but what about the rights of the statue sculptor/artist? Would the use of this picture require a fair use claim? Jenolen speak it! 01:55, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I guess a fair use tag could be added, but does the fact that the statue was commissioned in 1844 and finished around 1869 make a difference? [21]. And does that mean that the image here: Image:Benjamin Franklin Memorial.jpg is in the public domain, but should contain a fair use claim because the photographer didn't own copyright to the statue itself? Anyway, would {{this}} be the right template to use? --Jh12 13:03, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Original Message -----

From: Bill Zuk To: webmaster@ruudleeuw.com Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2007 2:31 PM Subject: Photo in the Alberta Aviation Hall of Fame Museum

Dear Mr. Leeuw, On the request of an editor of Wikipedia, the following image:  was temporarily placed into the following Wikipedia article:<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellanca_31-55>?

I found the image on your website and misread your disclaimer until the aforementioned editor pointed out that copyright privileges for the image must be obtained. My apologies for using your image without asking. Would you be able to provide this image for use in Wikipedia as a "public domain" image?

Bill ... in my other life, a meek and mild? librarian... Zuk Reply: Hello Bill, I quite endorse Wikipedia and frequently make use of the information provided. So I have no hesitation to grant permission herewith. If there such a thing like a credit, plse use Credit: Ruud Leeuw. Best regards, Ruud Leeuw, Netherlands. Is this sufficient for the release of the photo as a public domain image? Yours, Bzuk 03:27, 23 June 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Licensing of SourceForts screenshots on Wikipedia

Subject: Re: Fair use rationale for SourceForts screenshots on Wikipedia

Hey Greg, thanks for addressing us. I have posted a thread on our forums
(http://www.sourcefortsmod.com/boards/showthread.php?p=125931#post125931) which
details the fair use policy for all of the images located on our screenshots page.
This includes the ones listed on our Wikipedia article. I hope this sorts the problem.

Thanks,
Taylor Stieff

Taylor Stieff (Stieffers) is head developer of SourceForts. All SourceForts screenshots are now tagged with {{GFDL}} as per this forum post in this thread by Taylor. See Talk:SourceForts#Licensing of SourceForts screenshots for more information. I wrote to Benjamin Percy, American author, asking him who holds the copyright of the image of him on his website. He said he does, and when asked if he would allow it to be published into the public domain, he agreed, saying that "yes of course you have my permission." Letter has been forwarded to permissions at wikimedia dot org.

I wrote to Mr. Usman Shabbir, the copyright holder of Image:Sulemanki.jpg, and he has granted permisson to publish it on Wikipedia under the GFDL lisence. Letter has been forwarded to permissions at wikimedia dot org. Zaindy87 07:48, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The image seems to be a scanned copy from a news paper. Does PakDef.info itself own copyright? I hardly think that a seemingly war picture, taken presumably by military personnel, would be copyrighted by a private photographer. Therefore, any such "permission email" from the website owners won't count as proof of permission. Please clarify this. --Ragib 08:46, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Mr. Shabbir has been a military photographer with the Pakistan Army during the 1965 and 1971 wars. This picture is indeed scanned, but he took the photograph and owns the copyright of the picture. He has taken several other famous war pictures. You can view his work and other war pictures on the link I provided in the picture summary. You may also check the copyright status of the image at that link. Zaindy87 09:14, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
