- And a report someone writes, Once upon a December
The year is ending, and in some good news the topics here are renewing. Even if the ever-present death list (#10) is responsible for the top entry with a dead rapper - another recently deceased musician is at #14. The British election also brought in two pages (#5, #15) in addition to the polling that was happening last week (#22), and a biopic subject skyrockets to #2 while carrying said film along as well (#16). Another Netflix movie (#12) and series subject (#21) make company to The Irishman (#6, #8, #13), The Mandalorian (#4) and the royals from The Crown (#20, #24) - not that there isn't regular TV (#3) and film (#18). People getting chosen as Person of the Year (#11, #23), Miss Universe (#9) and Prime Minister (#19) and finding a way to escape religious persecution (#7) complete the list, along with two holdover sports entries (#17, #25)
For the week of December 8 to 14, 2019, the 25 most popular articles on Wikipedia, as determined from the WP:5000 are:
Rank Article Class Views Image About 1 Juice Wrld 3,659,287 Emo rap is an unsavory genre, it seems, as every year a popular member dies young. After Lil Peep and XXXTentacion, it was time for Jarad Anthony Higgins, aka Juice WRLD ("That's the name of a mall kiosk. Like, the O doesn't light up anymore. Whatever, I'm gonna pretend his name stands for Juice Warlord."), who last year broke out with "Lucid Dreams", and now tragically had a fatal seizure at just 21 due to a pill overdose. 2 Richard Jewell 1,879,643 The film about this security guard's efforts in containing the Centennial Olympic Park bombing and subsequent media demonization has finally hit theaters (#16). 3 Crisis on Infinite Earths (Arrowverse) 1,679,639 Every year, those DC Comics shows on The CW do a massive crossover. And 2019 had one inspired by the first DC event comic, bringing all heroes together to prevent the destruction of the multiverse. The event also had the return of two Supermen, Brandon Routh and Tom Welling (pictured). 4 The Mandalorian 1,093,421 The first live-action Star Wars TV series, exclusive to Disney+ and thus widely pirated, if only to see where that adorable Baby Yoda came from. 5 2019 United Kingdom general election 1,019,906 The lack of a Brexit withdrawal agreement led to a snap election, where the Conservative Party again got the majority of Parliament seats. 6 Jimmy Hoffa 952,929 A labor union leader who famously disappeared in 1975, Hoffa had already been the subject of an eponymous biopic starring Jack Nicholson, and now has been portrayed by another acting legend, Al Pacino, in our #8. 7 The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 873,457 India has now made it easier for persecuted religious minorities from the neighboring Muslim majority countries of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to get naturalized, with over 30,000 migrants expected to be immediate beneficiaries. 8 The Irishman[1] 839,331 Film award season has started to recognize Martin Scorsese's crime epic, so viewer interest remains high. 9 Miss Universe 2019 814,087 Even if some people question the relevance of beauty pageants in this day and age, they still gather attention. The winner was South African Zozibini Tunzi, leading to many congratulatory chants of "Wakanda Forever!" (to the disapproval of some). 10 Deaths in 2019 802,040 Cracked eggs, dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death
Can see its beady eyes...11 Greta Thunberg 713,761 The Swedish environmental activist who created school strike for the climate is still underage, but her efforts were recognized by being chosen by TIME as Person of the Year (#23). 12 Marriage Story (2019 film) 696,344 Another prestige release from Netflix, where Scarlett Johansson has marital problems with husband Adam Driver. High praise has been heaped upon Marriage Story, and the awards circle is also starting to hand out nominations. 13 Frank Sheeran 678,173 The central character of our #8, a truck driver turned Mafia hitman who is played by Robert De Niro. 14 Marie Fredriksson 662,622 Like our #1, a musician death, but one who had a long career even with health issues. The Swedish singer\keyboardist of Roxette became an international superstar in the late 1980s with hits such as "Listen to Your Heart" and "It Must Have Been Love", slowed down after brain cancer in 2002 impaired many of her functions (vision in one eye, the ability to read, write and count), yet still recovered enough for a world tour eight years later, and now died at 61 from a tumour recurrence. 15 Boris Johnson 643,042 Big views for the British election (#5) bring the Prime Minister along as well. 16 Richard Jewell (film) 634,747 Clint Eastwood is approaching 90, and doesn't seem ready to stop making movies. This time it was a biopic of our #2, which has gathered some criticism for simplification of the events and controversial portrayal of a reporter, and opened at 4th place in the box office (behind #18 and two movies that dropped out of the report, Frozen II and Knives Out). 17 2019 Southeast Asian Games 585,245 The Philippines are the fifth largest English-speaking population in the world, so they have enough people to push topics onto our list. Such is the case for these multi-sport games being hosted by the archipelago nation. 18 Jumanji: The Next Level 562,570 Two years after Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a massive hit for being the sequel moviegoers never knew they wanted, Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan (pictured), & co. are back in the deadly immersive video game. Reviews were positive and The Next Level also topped the box office (though my country only gets it in January). 19 Sanna Marin 542,927 In another case of Millennials rising to power, Finland has chosen this 34-year old to be their Prime Minister. 20 Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon 531,885 People watching The Crown continue to check on the British royal family members depicted there, with most views coming for Queen Elizabeth's (#24) late sister, played by Helena Bonham Carter. 21 Henry Lee Lucas 527,127 This year has been rife with serial killer entries. And again we can be blame it on Netflix, who documents this one in documentary series The Confession Killer. 22 Opinion polling for the 2019 United Kingdom general election 457,504 A sudden election such as our #5 made voting intentions very important to readers. 23 Time Person of the Year 482,825 An award that once went to myself and whoever is reading this, and is now held by the young girl at #11. 24 Elizabeth II 476,418 The lady who since 1952 wears the headwear piece that titles The Crown. 25 Anthony Joshua 471,729 Finishing off going from the Queen to a king of the ring from her kingdom, once and again heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
