Celtic Knot 2017 collage

• The University of Edinburgh held the first ever Celtic Knot: Wikipedia Language Conference in July 2017. This conference focused on supporting minority and regional language Wikipedias such as Scots Gaelic, Cornish, Breton, Welsh, Norwegian Bokmal, Sami, Irish Gaelic, catalan, Basque and many more. The conference was held at the National Library of Wales in 2018 and the University of Exeter's Cornwall campus in 2019 so it was pleasing to see, despite the Covid-19 lockdown, that the 2020 conference went ahead on 9-10 July and supported this time by Wikimedia Ireland. Though the conference was fully online, it was a great success with all of its outputs and talks published to YouTube openly and social events held such as Irish Gaelic poetry readings, a minority language quiz, and Irish dancing giving participants the opportunity to feel like they were in Limerick, as originally had been intended. The 5th Celtic Knot conference will be in Tromso, Norway in July 2021 so it is gratifying to see this community of smaller language Wikipedias continuing to support & engage with one another in this way.
• Hannah Rothmann, our new Wikimedia Training Intern, is a Classics undergraduate so has been finding out about the regular Wikipedia editing workshops held by Victoria Leonard as part of the Women's Classics Colloqium.
• Two new Women in Red workshops are being planned for August & September 2020 in collaboration with Dr. Jess Wade and the University of Edinburgh's Women in STEM student society (16 August) and the University of Edinburgh's Science Magazine (Welcome Week, 14-18 September 2020).

• Two 'how to teach with Wikipedia' workshops were held online on 1st and 15th July 2020. Both workshops were well attended (25-45 registered attendees) and feedback was very positive so the resident plans on running more throughout the next academic semester.
• The Reproductive Biology Bsc Wikipedia assignment is confirmed to be going ahead in semester one of 2020/2021.
• The Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment is confirmed to be going ahead in semester one of 2020/2021.
• The Global Health Pg Online Wikipedia assignment is confirmed to be going ahead in semester one of 2020/2021.

• Wikimedia Trainer Intern. Hannah Rothmann, a Classics undergraduate is now five weeks into a 12 week full-time basis this Summer to work on developing professional looking and scaffolded resources that would chunk the challenge of taking someone from beginner to advanced in Wikipedia and Wikidata. She has started creating new screencapture videos and has created a new plan for website page on the University of Edinburgh website to include these guides to Wikipedia and Wikidata.

Needful Things - a presentation for OER20 Conference on a new booklet of case studies of Wikimedia in UK education.

Create changes in policy and practice that enable open knowledge to flourish

• Support and enable individual organisations to adopt more open policies and practice
• Promote and facilitate sector-level change towards open knowledge
• Work with national and international partners to build the case for free knowledge
• Advocate for open knowledge within the UK’s public policy and legislative arena
• Contribute to international advocacy activities and programmes as appropriate

University of Edinburgh, has now won the Wikimedia UK Partnership of the Year 2018 and been runner up in the same award in 2020, pipped only by the National Library of Scotland. Still a great result for the ScotWiki community and the work of the University of Edinburgh given the National Library of Scotland's renaissance of work comes from Gavin Willshaw, a longtime proponent of Wikimedia work as Digital Curator at the University of Edinburgh and now Digitisation manager at the National Library of Scotland.

Wikimedia in Education - Wikimedia UK in partnership with the University of Edinburgh. It was the work of the last year in producing the 1st every booklet of UK case studies of Wikimedia in education that the University of Edinburgh and the work of the Edinburgh residency was recognised at the Wikimedia UK AGM on 18 July 2020.

Progress

• At the Wikimedia UK AGM on 18 July 2020, the University of Edinburgh was awarded runner up in Wikimedia UK's 'Partnership of the Year' for 2020. This recognises the work the university has done over the last year in supporting open knowledge in the curriculum and producing the first ever booklet of UK case studies of Wikimedia in Education.
• Emma Carroll, Data Visualisation student intern at the University of Edinburgh, and Laura Rose Wood, Wikimedia Women in Red student intern, were jointly recognised at the Wikimedia UK AGM on 18 July 2020 in the category for Up-and-coming Wikimedians 2020.
• The National Library of Scotland was awarded 'Partnership of the Year' at the Wikimedia UK AGM on 18 July 2020 for their work getting their digitisation staff to work from home during lockdown to share 3,000 OCR-ed Scottish chapbooks openly to Wikipedia's sister project, Wikisource. Gavin Willshaw, Digitisation Manager at the National Library of Scotland, has been a proponent of collaborating with the Wikimedia projects since 2015 as Digital Curator at the University of Edinburgh's Library & University Collections.

• Working with Wikimedia Training Intern, Hannah Rothmann, from 22 June 2020 to 11 September 2020 to create and curate 'How to edit Wikipedia' and 'How to edit Wikidata' resources to better support online course programmes and remote working in a more self-directed & scaffolded way.
• Collaborating with Wikimedia Training Intern, Hannah Rothmann, from 22 June 2020 to 11 September 2020 to develop a proposal for Wikipedia editing to become an activity eligible for the Edinburgh Award programme.
• Writing a 3,000 word chapter for October 1st 2020 on "Changing The Way Stories Are Told" for a new book on Wikipedia and Academic Libraries. This proposal has been initially accepted to go ahead but is to be reviewed once more before writing takes place.
• Collaboration between the residency and the Mapping the Scottish Reformation project is confirmed as going ahead later in Summer/Autumn 2020 with the University of Edinburgh's Interactive Content Service due to help create a 'proof of concept' website to showcase 7 Wikidata visualisations based on the work of the project.
• Due to meet with Professor Diana Paton w/c 17 August 2020 to discuss a Wikipedia editing event focused on Henry Dundas and Scotland's links with slavery.
• Scheduled to present on How to edit Wikipedia and improve representation online in 7 sessions for new/returning UG & PG students as the new semester begins with Welcome Week 14-18 September 2020.
