Strategic Aim 1 - Knowledge Equity

• Develop partnerships that increase access to underrepresented cultural heritage
• Support the development of minority and indigenous language Wikipedias
• Encourage new and existing partners to help tackle the gender gap on Wikimedia
• Identify other areas of inequality and bias and create partnerships to help address these
• Engage with volunteers and partners across the UK, widening the charity’s geographic reach

Women in Red workshop

• One new Women in Red workshops was held on 3 February 2021. The resident prepared 3 years' worth of obituaries to make sure these women were celebrated and remembered on Wikipedia.
  • 19 new articles were created at the 3 February event inc. May Moar (1825 – June 2, 1894) who was a British crofter in the Shetland Isles who was awarded an RNLI silver medal for rescuing fishermen off the island of Yell.
  • 53 more articles were edited.
  • 386 edits in total.
  • 14 editors.
  • 16.6K words added.

HIV Scotland editathon

• Lorna Campbell and I wrote blog articles about the HIV Scotland editathon at end of January 2021. Received feedback from the event also.

• Awaiting word on when we can go ahead with recruiting an Open Collections ('Wikisourceror') student internship next Summer to support the Library & University Collections team develop workflows to share collections to Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource.
• Awaiting word on when we can go ahead with recruiting an Open Edinburgh (Open Data and Knowledge Equity) student internship next Summer to develop new resources, and course activities to support the teaching of data science and support equality, diversity and inclusion in teaching and learning at the university.

Wikimedia in the Curriculum

#SayHerName is a social movement that seeks to raise awareness for Black female victims of police brutality and anti-Black violence in the United States - one of the articles being translated this semester on the Translation Studies MSc

• The Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment from semester two commenced with an online workshop on reviewing best practice taking place on 10 February 2021. This semester students have been invited to consider how best to support global understanding of black and postcolonial history through their 1,500-2,000 word translation assignment.

• Been approached to discuss Wikidata in the Curriculum assignments with Stacy Allison-Cassin at the University of Toronto - to be arranged.
• Ran an introductory editathon workshop on the Computer Science course programme at invitation of course leader, Judy Robertson, and Open Source advocate and student, Ritwik Sarkar. A crowdsourced list of Forgotten Heroines of Computer Science was compiled at short notice. Though numbers were very low, the discussions on the process of creating new pages was warmly received and the hope is this will lead to further project work with the undergraduate programme.

Podcast on Wikimedia in education

• Glaire Anderson, Lecturer and course leader on the Stars, Talismans and Robots Honours course on Islamic Art, wrote a blogpost on her experiences teaching with Wikipedia and seems keen to repeat the experience in the following years. A 4-part podcast series with the University's influential Teaching Matters blog is being discussed with Glaire happy to take part in conversation with her students on 18 March 2021.

PhD student editathon on Women in Digital Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

• Discussed with Lisa Otty at the Edinburgh Centre for Data, Culture and Society about a Women in Digital Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences event to be held on March 17th 2021 for their PhD students. Event page now created and booking is open. Due to lack of signups this may be rescheduled.

Conference submissions

• Been approved for a panel session at the University of Edinburgh's Learning and Teaching Conference 2021 on Wikipedia in the Classroom – Student-led activism promoting knowledge equity and SDG4 - Professor Diana Paton and History Society student Scarlett Kiaras-Attari have agreed to take part and present on the project to improve coverage of Scotland, Slavery and Black History.
• Been approved to present on Wikipedia in the Classroom – Student-led activism promoting knowledge equity and SDG4 at OER21 conference in April also.
• Considering submitting an abstract on Wikipedia in Translation based on the work conducted on the Translation Studies MSc for the December 2021 conference, Understanding Wikipedia’s Dark Matter: Translation and Multilingual Practice in the World’s Largest Online Encyclopaedia.

Proposals for student project work

• Redrafted proposal for the student Edinburgh Award (50hrs) for Wikipedia editing. Meeting with Kirsty Stewart at the Careers Service on 11 March 2021 to discuss changes to get this implemented in October 2021.
• Met with Lorna Campbell, University of Edinburgh OER Service, on Thursday 4th February 2021 to discuss Student Experience Grants (up to £5000 available for projects) and put together a proposal once I'd identified 4 students willing to collaborate on a project. This will likely have to be shelved until next Student Experience Grant funding window in Autumn/Winter 2021.

Progress

• Attended Wikimedia UK meeting on Friday 26 February 2021 to share developments and challenges experienced with Wikimedia UK and other Wikimedians in Residence at other institutions. Next meeting planned for end of March 2021.
• Submitted chapter for a new Open Access book on Wikipedia and Academic Libraries on the work of the residency to improve the number of biographies of women on Wikipedia over the last five years. The chapter has been reviewed by the publishers and will be published in September 2021.
