Strategic Aim 1 - Knowledge Equity

• Develop partnerships that increase access to underrepresented cultural heritage

The Wikidata Map of Accused Witches project - new intern now recruited to quality assure the data

• The developer, Richard Lawson, has been asked to make improvements in line with our suggestions but we are have now recruited a student intern to work part-time (February to end of May 0.2FTE) to support us in terms of quality assuring the data and making sure the data and visualisations are consistent and working as expected. Interviews took place 30th January 2023 from the 45 applicants shortlisted. The successful applicant should be in post one day per week from w/c 13th February 2023.

Women in Red workshops

One new Women in Red workshop was held on Friday 27th January 2023 - our 69th monthly workshop at the university came with tea, coffee and biscuits!

• 5 new articles were created at the 27 January 2023 event inc. Lady Margaret Brodie Stewart became Margaret Herschel (1810–1864) and she was a British botanical artist and hostess. While she was in South Africa she and her husband made dozens of botanical paintings of wild flowers which they brought back to Europe for study. Her husband was one of the leading scientists in Victorian Britain. Also a new page for Jennifer Marianne Hart, also known as Maidie Bridge (maiden name) or Maidie Hart. She was born in Brookfield, Renfrewshire, Scotland and died in Edinburgh at the age of 80 (15 December 1916 - 7 November 1997). She was a campaigner for equality, development and peace.

Honours of Scotland now has a page on Chinese Wikipedia!

52 students completed the 2022/2023 Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment - learning important meaningful translation practice ahead of the world of work by each translating, peer reviewing and publishing 2,000-2,500 words from high quality Featured and Good Articles on Wikipedia into another language Wikipedia. The October to January assignment concluded on 13 January 2023. The translations can be found on the assignment page here

• The Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment for Semester One began on 12 October 2022 with 63 students in the cohort this year. The students have all been taught best practice about how to translate their article. The assignment concluded 13th January 2023 following the 52 remaining students peer reviewing translations by 6th January 2023.
• The Digital Education MSc component on Wikipedia and Knowledge Equity is to go ahead w/c 13 February 2023 as a 2 week block inc. training webinar, short activities, assigned reading and discussion forums.
• Professor Charles West, Medieval Historian, is joining the University of Edinburgh in July 2023 and has been liaising with the Wikimedian in Residence over a Wikipedia assignment for Semester 1 2023/2024 on the Online History MSc.
• Five new case studies can now be added to the Wikimedia in Education - Booklet of Case Studies. Dr. Glaire Anderson, History of Art, and Evelyn Balsells PhD, Global Health Challenges Pg Online, have signed off on their case studies and images to be used. Graphic designer, Nicky Greenhorn, has submitted a new proof design for the new case studies as of 21 September 2022 and this will now be reviewed by Dr. Sara Thomas, Wikimedia UK, and myself to see if any further changes are required. NB: Will be returning to this in February 2023.

Conferences

• The resident will be attending the 2023 Classical Association conference at the University of Cambridge on 21-23 April 2023 to take part in an international roundtable on Teaching with Wikipedia.
• The resident has been submitted and the abstract has been approved as co-author/presenter with Lorna Campbell, OER Service, on a University of Edinburgh abstract on Open Education in the Curriculum to the Open Education Resources Conference (OER23),taking place in Inverness on 4-6 April 2023.
• The resident has submitted an abstract to speak at the Digital Universities UK conference at the University of Leeds on 17-20 April 2023. Will need to see if this is received favourably.

Wikipedia Editing - Edinburgh Award activity to conclude 31 March 2023 for year two

Birubala Rabha (above) runs an organisation which spreads awareness against witch-hunting called Mission Birubala, has spent the last 15 years campaigning against the practice. Rahba was instrumental in the passing of The Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition Prevention and Protection) Act, which many say is India's toughest anti-witch-hunting law and in 2021 was recognised for her work by the Government of India with the prestigious Padma Shri award.

Witch-hunts in India is a brand new ~5,000 word article on Wikipedia and contributed by 1st year UG student Lina Turner for her Edinburgh Award project focused on Witchhunting: past and present

• The second iteration of the Digital Volunteering with Wikipedia - a new Edinburgh Award to accredit students for extended project work on Wikipedia began with a new cohort on 19th October 2022. 44 students registered initially with 22 submitting their 400 word action plans by the Award's first deadline - Friday 28th October 2022. Their project pages are now added to our main page for the Edinburgh Award with the Input 2 session attended by 19 students on 7th December 2022. 16 students submitted their 400 word reflections on their 3 chosen skills and impact achieved so far along with their fortnightly log of activities undertaken by the 6th January 2023 submission deadline. The students published edits thus far can be found here.

• Support and enable individual organisations to adopt more open policies and practice

Progress

• Met with Jaine Blayney and Richard Fallis at Queen's University Belfast (QUB) to discuss how they could start their own Wikipedia Women in Red initiative.
• Trained Ana Colombo at the Society of Experimental Biologists who wishes to run an online editathon as part of their annual conference in Edinburgh.
• Liaised with Caroline Austin at University of Newcastle and the Athena Forum to see if a speaker could outline the how & why of Wikipedia Women in Red to encourage awareness and uptake in learned societies. Lucy Crompton-Reid at Wikimedia UK will now speak at one of their upcoming events.
• Corresponded with Siobhan O'Connor, formerly a lecturer in Nursing Informatics at the University of Edinburgh and Royal Society of Edinburgh's Young Academy and now a lecturer at University of Manchester, to link her up with local Wikimedians in the Manchester area who could support work in the curriculum there.
• Been invited to speak to Code for Africa about their themed event on 'How to be an effective editor'.
• Have had two internship requests provisionally approved: a further Summer internship (12 weeks 1.0 FTE) to do more work on the Map of Accused Witches Wikidata project; and a p/t role of 'Junior Wikimedian in Residence' to support the work of the residency in the longer term (events management and promotion, community building for Women in Red and Edinburgh Award, outreach to different geographically distant parts of the university and more)
• E.McAndrew and L.Campbell co-authoring paper with Dr. Melissa Highton on Open Education in the Curriculum for the EdUTec journal at the invitation of Daniel Villar-Rubia at the University of Cadiz.
• University of Edinburgh student, Heidi Berg, has undergone Wikimedia UK training and wishes to get more involved in supporting University of Edinburgh editathons.
• Adam Proctor from Fortsunlight Productions has also been in touch about including the work of the residency in a short BBC documentary about Scottish Witchcraft and focusing on the case of Lilias Adie.

• E.McAndrew has been supporting Communications Officer, Joanna Clarke, at the University's Bayes Centre to write a Wikipedia article.
• Caroline Austin at Newcastle University also enquired about information about the Wikipedia Women in Red project to be presented to the Athena Forum.

• Next phase of the Mapping the Scottish Reformation Wikidata project with Dr. Chris Langley (formerly of Newman University, Birmingham and now at the Open University) and Professor Mikki Brock (Washington and Lee University, USA) - to be confirmed (sources of funding delaying further work).
• Digital Education MSc Wikipedia component to begin 2 week block in February 2023.
• Second iteration of a new 55-80hr Edinburgh Award for Digital Volunteering with Wikipedia began on 19 October 2022 and will conclude on 31st March 2023.
• Updating the Booklet of Case Studies of Wikimedia in UK Education to relaunch a new digital edition. Graphic designer Nicky Greenhorn has submitted a proof as of 13th July 2022 and this will be reviewed by Dr. Sara Thomas and myself asap with a view to publishing online and hopefully finalised by end of December 2022.
• The Map of Accused Witches site. The site just needs developer time to implement the new data visualisations and reorientate the dropdown menus.
• New Scottish Witchhunter student internship now recruited to work 0.2FTE from 17 February (tbc) to 5 May 2023 to help quality assure the witchcraft data in Wikidata so that we can launch updates to the website later this year.
