Witchfinder General - data visualisation student intern

Update on the Wikidata Map of Accused Witches project - new intern in post to quality assure the data

• Our web developer, colleague Richard Lawson, has been asked to make improvements in line with our suggestions but we are have now recruited a student intern, Claire Panella, to work part-time (22 February 2023 to end of May 0.2FTE) to support us in terms of quality assuring the data and making sure the data and visualisations are consistent and working as expected. Interviews took place 30th January 2023 from the 45 applicants shortlisted. Claire has been inducted and started with comparing the gender and names of 3,217 accused witches in the Survey database with the gender and names for the accused witches in Wikidata using R Studio to compare the information in the two databases.
• Claire has contacted the members of the EveryPolitician project and Wikidatans around the world to ask about best practice when trying to compare two datasets at a point in time and is looking at tools like the Prompter tool as a method of doing so though it appears to use an old 2018 version of Ruby and incompatible with newer updates. She has now blogged about her experience and will continue to document her work as she goes.
• 8 x interviews have been scheduled for w/c 10 April 2023 to recruit our next 'Witchfinder General' Data Visualisation intern for Summer 2023 (12 weeks 1.0FTE from 5 June 2023).

Women in Red workshops

One new Women in Red workshop was held on Friday 31st March 2023 - our 71st monthly workshop at the university came with tea, coffee and biscuits!

• 40 new articles were created from the 31 March 2023 event. Pages created included Kath M. Melia (died 25 October 2022) who was a sociologist, professor of nursing, researcher, academic author and campaigner for ethics in healthcare. Also Emily Duval born Emily Hayes (25 November 1860 – 31 October 1924) who was a British suffragette. She twice joined the Women's Social and Political Union and she was a member of the Women's Freedom League. She served several terms of imprisonment and her family members were also suffragettes. Another new article was Sarah Pedersen who is an academic researcher and writer. Pedersen's research focuses on women's engagement with the media and politicians. She holds a chair as Professor of Communication and Media at Robert Gordon University, in Scotland.

Wikimedia in the Curriculum - current work

• Professor Charles West, Medieval Historian, is joining the University of Edinburgh in July 2023 and has been liaising with the Wikimedian in Residence over a Wikipedia assignment for Semester 1 2023/2024 on the Online History MSc.
• Five new case studies can now be added to the Wikimedia in Education - Booklet of Case Studies. Dr. Glaire Anderson, History of Art, and Evelyn Balsells PhD, Global Health Challenges Pg Online, have signed off on their case studies and images to be used. Graphic designer, Nicky Greenhorn, has submitted a new proof design for the new case studies as of 21 September 2022 and this will now be reviewed by Dr. Sara Thomas, Wikimedia UK, and myself to see if any further changes are required. NB: Will be returning to complete in April 2023.
• The resident has edited a video together of student feedback on Wikimedian in the Curriculum at the University of Edinburgh - this has been shared with Lorna Campbell, OER Service, to be broadcast at the OER Conference in Inverness 4-6 April 2023.

Conferences

• The resident will be attending the 2023 Classical Association conference at the University of Cambridge on 21-23 April 2023 to take part in an international roundtable on Teaching with Wikipedia.
• Lorna Campbell, OER Service University of Edinburgh, has had her abstract on Open Education in the Curriculum approved for presenting at the Open Education Resources Conference (OER23),taking place in Inverness on 4-6 April 2023. E McAndrew has created a video of student feedback to be included in the conference presentation.
• The resident has submitted an abstract to speak at the Digital Universities UK conference at the University of Leeds on 17-20 April 2023. Will need to see if this is received favourably.

Wikipedia Editing - Edinburgh Award activity concludes 31 March 2023 for year two

• The second iteration of the Digital Volunteering with Wikipedia - a new Edinburgh Award to accredit students for extended project work on Wikipedia began with a new cohort on 19th October 2022 and has now concluded as of 31st March 2023. 44 students registered initially with 22 submitting their 400 word action plans by the Award's first deadline - Friday 28th October 2022. Their project pages are now added to our main page for the Edinburgh Award with the Input 2 session attended by 19 students on 7th December 2022. 16 students submitted their 400 word reflections on their 3 chosen skills and impact achieved so far along with their fortnightly log of activities undertaken by the 6th January 2023 submission deadline.
• 10 students took part in the final showcase event on 29 March 2023 in the boardroom overlooking Edinburgh Castle. They did short 5 min presentations on their projects, the impact they achieved and the the skills they grew most proficient in. The Award concluded with the students continuing to edit up to the final midnight deadline on 31st March 2023. These 10 'knowledge activist' heroes have been recommended to receive the Edinburgh Award for 2023. Almost 76,000 words have now been added to Wikipedia and the students will come back together for a celebration event at ther Playfair Library on 26 April 2023.

New Internships

• Have had one internship request approved: a further Summer internship (12 weeks 1.0 FTE) to do more work on the Map of Accused Witches Wikidata project. Twitter post advertising position. Interviews to take place w/c 10 April 2023.
• Received approval for recruiting a p/t role of Assistant Wikimedian in Residence to support the work of the residency in the longer term (events management and promotion, community building for Women in Red and Edinburgh Award, outreach to different geographically distant parts of the university and more) on a 1 year 0.2-0.4FTE basis. Awaiting more info on the recruitment process for this position.

Progress

• E.McAndrew contributed case studies of Wikimedia in the Curriculum to a paper co-authored by Lorna Campbell and Dr. Melissa Highton on Open Education in the Curriculum for the EdUTec journal at the invitation of Daniel Villar-Rubia at the University of Cadiz. This has now been completed and submitted before end of March 2023.
• E. McAndrew attended second Gender.Ed steering group meeting on 7 March 2023.
• E.McAndrew corresponded with Ysabelle Graham-Smith at the University of Edinburgh's School of Geosciences about recording a 20-30 minute interview about our gender equality work with the intention for it to be edited down to about 1 – 1 ½ minutes to use on social media. This is still under discussion as no free time was able to be found in March 2023 but this can be revisited and student editing volunteers asked to come in and contribute also.

Partnership interactions

• E. McAndrew and student intern Claire Panella created a video presentation for the University of Lisbon and their Wikimedian in Residence there, Rute Correia. The presentation was a 25-30 minutes long and broadcast on 31st March 2023. The subject of the presentation was "The Map of Accused Witches Wikidata project" - covering both the history of the project and the work being done now and in the future.

Projects/events in development

• Next phase of the Mapping the Scottish Reformation Wikidata project with Dr. Chris Langley (formerly of Newman University, Birmingham and now at the Open University) and Professor Mikki Brock (Washington and Lee University, USA) - to be confirmed (sources of funding delaying further work). Update for March 2023: Chris and Mikki are preparing an AHRC research proposal and want LTW to be a key part of developing the Mapping the Scottish Reformation project and taking it to the next 2.0 stage.
• Updating the Booklet of Case Studies of Wikimedia in UK Education to relaunch a new digital edition. Graphic designer Nicky Greenhorn has submitted a proof as of 13th July 2022 and this will be reviewed by Dr. Sara Thomas and myself asap with a view to publishing online and hopefully finalised by end of April 2023.
• The Map of Accused Witches Wikidata site just needs developer time to implement the new data visualisations and reorientate the dropdown menus.
• New Scottish Witchhunter student internship now recruited. Claire Panella is to work 0.2FTE from 22 February to 5 May 2023 to help quality assure the witchcraft data in Wikidata so that we can launch updates to the website later this year. So far she has identified 32 anomalies in the gender recorded and 22 anomalies in the name used for accused witches in Wikidata.
• Been invited to participate in the Witches of Scotland podcast (details tbc.) and potentially the 2023 Edinburgh Book Festival (tbc.)
• Periodically supporting the Places of Worship in Scotland (POWiS) database being mapped into Wikidata.
• Periodically supporting the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Military Museum database being mapped into Wikidata.

• Professor Charles West, formerly of University of Sheffield, is joining the University of Edinburgh in July 2023 and has been discussing a student assignment for the Online History MSc with the Wikimedian in Residence for Semester 1 (session 2023/2024).
• Hemangini Gupta, Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Politics and International Relations has requested holding an editing event in December 2023 with Gender.Ed's European partners at freie Uni, Berlin who organize a #4GenderStudies event on Dec 18 every year to promote Gender Studies in the Academy. The idea is to edit pages about feminist authors on the web and/or pages related to gender studies.
• Dr. Terri Ochiagha, Lecturer in Global Anglophone Literatures, wants to apply for research grant for January to December impact project where University of Edinburgh students improve topic coverage of author Chinua Achebe and his works on Wikipedia over several sessions.
